Timing of Address No Accident, Official Says

The winner of the Iowa caucuses on Monday night will have an unexpected competitor waiting right around the corner, and he is not one of the Democrats running for president.

The opponent is President (sic) Dictator Bush and his State of the Union address, which White House officials scheduled for Tuesday night, only 24 hours after Iowa, to draw attention from the Democratic victor, a Republican close to the Bush campaign said.

1. And this is the speech where they plan to show * "above politics"?
I think the only thing this administration does that's not about politics is graft.

4. an attempt to rebut O'Neill's story
which illustrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that *'s entire agenda is political.

15. they are already using "buzzwords" to refute O'Neill
during a press conference - Rumsfeld said that Bush* was very much "engaged", asked very probing questions, knowlegable about the issues... yadda yadda yadda

meanwhile - get your SOTU scorecard --> http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=102-01162004

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- TomPaine.com, the nation's leading online public interest journal, today unveiled a scorecard for the upcoming State of the Union address on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The scorecard is free and available for download at http://www.TomPaine.com/scorecard.

The scorecard focuses on six important issues: Health Care, Jobs & Economic Recovery, Funding Education, the Environment, State & Federal Spending and the War on Terror. "How straightforward will the president be with us about the real state of the Union?" asked TomPaine.com executive editor Nick Penniman. "We think all Americans should be the judge." The scorecard has three options to choose from when rating the president's presentation of the issues: Acknowledged, Ignored, or Spun.

2. Actually they have saved us from 24 hours of "What will * say in
the SOTU address." Thank God for the Iowa caucus.

3. Oh, what a kicker!
The very last sentence of the story:

"He is president for the course of this year," the official said, "regardless of what happens in November."

Do I detect just a tiny little whiff of defeatism there? Sing it loud, kids.

8. It'll be above politics and beneath contempt
We'll need a scorecard to track the lies.

The winner of tomorrow's Ioewa caucus -- in fact, all of the candidates -- should call upon the unelected fraud to APOLOGIZE to the American people for MISLEADING them about specific allegations that Iraq was seeking WMDs and DIRECTLY apologize to Valerie Plame for someone on his staff blowing her cover and setting back the war on proliferation of WMDs.

Then -- when he doesan't -- in their response, the Dems should excoriate the lying fraud for his dishonesty and arrogance -- something like:

"Is this Mr. Bush's definition of accountability and integrity? It is inexcusable. And we can only wonder how many ways Mr. Bush has deceived the country with this evening's speech. Only one thing is certain -- it is time for him to go."

10. Far be it from me to defend Bush
Edited on Sun Jan-18-04 10:43 PM by RatTerrier
But I thought the SOTU was held on the third Monday of January every year.

Nonetheless, the big game is next week in New Hampshire, followed by 48 other primaries and caucuses, and I doubt he can have a SOTU address every week for the next three months or so. Besides, caucuses are all about hard-core Dems, who could really give a shit about what Bush has to say.

What does ol' shrubbie have up his sleeve for next week?

11. We'll need a calculator for it
W never quits wanting to spend more money. I feel like I'll need a calculator to add up all of his spending programs he'll suggest.

12. Nope
SOTU tends to be on a TUESDAY, near the end of January, but it is not always the third tuesday, or even in January. For Example:

Here are the dates for Clinton's SOTU addresses:

93: Feb.17 Wed.

94: Jan.25 Tues.

95: Jan.24 Tues.

96: Jan 23 Tues.

97: Feb.4 Tues

98: Jan. 27 Tues.

99: Jan.19 Tues.

00: Jan.27 Thurs.

This date was chosen for completely political purposes, just like the repug operative said.

13. If any SOTU should've been rescheduled due to "politics"...
...it should've been Big Dog's 1998 speech, which came on the heels of the breaking Lewinski scandal. But Big Dog went through with it (much to his credit)...

16. If it was last week...
It could have been said to be taking the emphasis off Iowa.

If it was next week, the same could be said of NH.

I tend to agree with the earlier poster. I'm not one to defend Bush for anything but I think this timing is pretty much just the way it is. A case could be made for "political gain" no matter when the SOTU was scheduled.

17. I wish a hacker would hack into his ear piece
Just one time I wish someone would hack into his ear piece during on of his fraudulent speeches. It would be funny if they screwed up his words and the audience could once see what a twit Bush is. Most of us know it but the right wingers need to see it for them selfs and even if they did see it they would make up an excuse for him flubbing up his speech.
