Right-wing radio host rips Democrats, McCain apologizes for the spectacle

On the day the Democrats are set to slug it out in Cleveland, a conservative radio host fired some haymakers before an appearance by Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain.

In the GOP stronghold of Cincinnati, right-wing radio host Bill Cunningham whipped up a crowd of more than 300 supporters by using Barack Obama's middle name often, ripping Hillary Clinton as a first lady and referring to former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as an "ugly, old woman."...

When McCain took the stage, he spoke for 26 minutes to more than 300 supporters at the century-old Memorial Hall, hardly mentioning his likely opponents.

Afterward, he walked up to a crowd of reporters and apologized for Cunningham's words. He said he respects Clinton and Obama and called them "honorable Americans."..

9. An "immediate response" would have been McCain speaking
out and condemning the remarks from the stage. Oh well, maybe it's me. Am I expecting too much from someone who holds himself up as a 'legitimiate American hero'. Based on what I've seen, he's only slightly less scummy than your average Repuke which ain't saying much.

62. McCain wasn't there.
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 01:38 PM by djg21
Maybe you should read the article before opining? McCain apparently showed up at the event only after Cunningham made his stupid remarks. According to media reports, McCain learned of the comments after he was done speaking.

I'm not a McCain fan, but fair is fair.

Cunningham is an abject moron. He spews his vitriol every Sunday night on his syndicated radio show. I thought Drudge and Rush were tools. This clown is far worse. Last week he was rambling on about the Farakhan endorsement. As if Obama has control over the public figures who state that they will be voting for him. Cunningham's comments are especially ironic, given that he is a fascist nazi f#@k, and he apparently endorses McCain. Given the choice, I'd think Farakhan's endorsement to be far less offensive than that of Cunningham.

63. According to Mike Malloy on NovaM last night, it depends on
whom you ask as to whether McInsane learned before he spoke or only after.

If he learned afterword as you imply, if he's such a big hero, why didn't he get back up on the stage and denounce the remarks to those assembled? He wants to profit from RW racism while 'seeming' to repudiate it. Just like he wants to get in bed with lobbyists while 'seeming' to repudiate lobbyists.

Whatever

If McCain really had been sincere, he would have called Cunningham on it as soon as he took the stage. Loudly! I understood the article to say that McCain waited till after his appearance. It gave me the impression that his statement was an after thought and that he is just covering his ass.

This is aimed at McCain not you monmouth.

McCain let Cunningham spill his reckless, baseless hypocritical bile -- why didn't McCain stop him as soon as Cunningham's spew was apparent!? Instead he whispered "sorry" to the press as an aside after the fact. He apologizes so he could say later, "I made a statement against Cunningham." Come on stop the crap before it starts and show real honesty and regard John!

Prety Disgusting tactics to bring this kind of thing up constantly. The RW talk radio hosts are going to have to work very hard to discredit and bash Obama, this is just a sneak peak. Who gives a rats ass what a man's middle name is? As log as its not Geroge Herbert Walker or George Walker it should never make a difference.

30. So they have adopted "fake-nice" into their playbook....
hmmm that IS bad! I predict that this will change as mCcain falls behind the Democratic nominee. We have already seen this happen between our two candidates. The strategy is "pull off the gloves" when you are behind and possibly at risk of losing the game. I predict that the mCcain handlers won't wait to get too far behind before doing just that. Americans are turning out to vote for Democrats at over 2 to 1 right now, worse yet for Senator mCcain, he hitches his wagon to bush's 19% popularity! No we won't wait long for the death spiral at all. First it will be attacks by groups "unassociated" with the mCcain campaign, when that fails it will be Senator mCcain himself up there slinging mud.

I predicted earlier that Senator Obama would continue to be blessed by a 'surge' of voters which would continue beyond the time that Senator Clinton drops out. That "populism surge" will be with him through his campaign against Senator mCcain. Senator Obama supporters, (read: We The People") are so fed up with business as usual, that every time Senator mCcain slings mud it will be perceived as MORE business as usual. That mud slinging by Senator mCcain will strengthen Senator Obama and have only the effect of widening the margin between them. I predicted that barring unforeseen tragedy, Senator Obama will gain the White House in a landslide that will shock the pundits. We The People will send this CLEAR mandate with Senator Obama: WE THE PEOPLE ARE SICK OF BUSINESS AS USUAL! GIVE US THAT PROMISED CHANGE!

This is why I fight here and elsewhere to bring civility to we forum users. The more support we can throw behind Senator Obama, (not yet but soon, Senator Clinton is still very much in it), the louder that mandate will be. I want to insure that Senator Obama hears it as well. I don't want there to be any doubts as to what We The People want...no more of this taking stuff off the table. This time it needs to be We The People who mean business! This may be our last chance to save American democracy from the emerging aristocracy. We The People have little interest in becoming peasants, we are feeling that pinch harder each day and we know who is doing the pinching. There is no getting around that factoid for Senator mCcain. He will try to blame it on everything under the sun including the Democrats but he will fail to convince anyone but the most drowned kool-aid drinkers. Mark my words: LANDSLIDE!

denounced those comments from the stage and given Cunningham the verbal ass kicking he so richly deserves.

McCain wants it both ways - red meat to fire up the repuke crowd and an insincere apology afterwards directed toward the press so they'll remind the masses what a fine, upstanding guy he is.

He is a very right-wing midday talk show host on a very right-wing radio station in a very right-wing city. They knew what they were getting when they had him do the warm up.

He's stuck his foot in his mouth before, mainly about racial issues in city.
