Moderate Muslims define 'jihad'

MODERATE Muslim community leaders in Southeast Asia are producing a book that will define the concept of jihad in a bid to stop militants from misusing it to justify violence, a newspaper reported today.

Media often use jihad to describe a "holy war", but for most Muslims it means "struggle" or "perseverance" - such as an effort to become more spiritual or avoid temptation in daily life - the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore told The Straits Times.

Council officials weren't immediately available for comment.

"We want to reach out to non-Muslims, because the word jihad has been misused by many irresponsible groups for their own narrow objectives," council president Alami Musa was quoted as saying.

in the 1960s in Latin american countries around iberation theology which sough to to bridge the church and the state, ." Starting in the 1960s, a great wind of renewal blew through the churches. The greatest Jihad is to say a just word to an unjust ruler.

The misuse of the word Jihad is not due solely to those who misuse it to justify their un-Islamic actions, but also due to the wrongful use of it in the western media.

Jihad means struggle. Not crusade, or holy war... and the greatest struggle is to be found within ourselves.
