Lieberman Leads New Democratic Poll (But Hillary Beats All!!)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-2945979,00.html

Joe Lieberman had the most support from
Democratic voters in a national poll released
Thursday, followed closely by Dick Gephardt, John
Kerry and Howard Dean. But if Sen. Hillary Rodham
Clinton of New York is added to the field, she
dominates, taking 48 percent to 11 percent for
Lieberman, with others in single digits.

Lieberman, a Connecticut senator, was at 21
percent and Gephardt, a Missouri representative,
was at 16 percent - just within the error margin of
plus or minus 5 percentage points in the
Quinnipiac University poll.

Kerry, a Massachusetts senator, was at 13
percent and Dean, a former governor of Vermont
was at 10 percent. Other candidates in the
nine-member field were at 6 percent or lower.
More than a fifth, 21 percent, were undecided.

In several recent national polls, Lieberman, Kerry
and Gephardt were grouped very close together
at the top. Lieberman led early national polls, at
least partially because of his higher name
recognition.

1. I'm getting sick of "AND WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF HILLARY RUNS?!?!??!?!"
Edited on Thu Jul-24-03 07:26 AM by arcos
They ask like if everyone is actually wondering if she will run... and we all know there's a 99.9999% chance she WON'T.

Cut the crap!!

3. She should run.
She'd win. I don't see why she won't run.

7. Yeah, I don't think so either.
It just boggles my mind, though. She'd win. She'd win hands down.

Man... let's send out some metaphysical karma to her to get her to run.

C'mon Hillary.

13. Why would you want her to run?
She's actually pretty moderate to conservative in her voting record. And if you even think that our side is motivated and galvanized by the Iraq invasion, just get H. Clinton into the race and see just how fast the rabid RWers get active. She's still their best campaign issue.

21. No Doubt...
I'd rather have the Repukes taking petty pot-shots at someone like Kerry or Dean - even Leiberman, rather than acutally give them some real ammo to work with. Besides....a fresh face in there would bring in some new voters - something we desperately need.

2. The lesson from this poll is that voters are nostalgic for Clinton
Bill, that is.

It seems they're preferring candidates witht he closest obvious connections to Bill.

5. I think many voters are impressed by Hillary on her own.
Many accord her even more respect than Bill.

6. I think she's fantastic too, but I think voters think
they're going to get what they got with Bill if they had a President Hil. Liebermann was Bill's VP's VP choice. Gephardt (although he backstabbed Bill many times) was the speaker of the House while Bill was president.

Of course name recognition alone produces the same results. Nonetheless, I have the sense that it's nostalgia for Bill which has the most influence on these numbers.

I think it's revealing that the polls never throw Bill's name into the pool. I think he'd be an overwhelming winner.

8. I agree with that.
But I think that they would get with Hillary what they got with Bill. So their beliefs aren't unfounded even though they are predicated upon (at least it seems you're arguing), name recognition.

11. I agree with that too.
However, one of the Democrats strongest suits is looking forward, is progress.

One reason Bill was so great is because he was new. The Democrats always need something new, some hope for the future.

I would be happy if Hillary became president some day. However, I think that, to win, she needs to cut with the past and create a feeling about her which is forward thinking.

If we had presidntial election which was a competition between looking back to Bush I or looking back to Bill, I think just the fact that we were debating over how far to look backward would tilt the race in favor of Republicans.

What Democrats really really need to do is make an argument that we're looking forward to '92, if you get my picture. They need to argue that 92-00 was a move forward, that 00-04 is a step backward, and that we gotta start moving forward again.

9. This is Republican propaganda
Edited on Thu Jul-24-03 07:59 AM by leesa
They want us to believe that we want Lieberman for President. Every grassroots poll doesn't even give the man a blip on the radar screen. And for some unknown reason, the GOP wants to push Hillary's name out there, probably to keep the hate alive among the Freepers. She's not even running. This is so standard. This week is a huge PR push by the Republicans to make it seem as though the US really is behind their agenda. It's becoming so transparent. Rove's tricks are really getting old! Don't fall for this crap. Bought and paid for by the Bush Crime Family, AKA the Bush administration.
The one they are really afraid of is Dean.

10. This makes sense....
Let's all remind ourselves that we are political junkies...and in the minority. Most people don't spend every spare moment reading up on politics. Lieberman's lead is because the average Dem remembers Gore-Lieberman. And Hillary...well, Dems love the Clintons. Let's not discourage anyone...yet. When primary time comes we'll work our asses off getting the right person...whoever that might mean...nominated. And all these Leiberman and Hillary people will jump on the band wagon.

12. I agree, magnolia.
Although I support Lieberman, national polls, though important, are not yet a true measure of the relative popularity of the candidates. When the candidates actually campaign in various states during the run-up to the various primaries, the electorate will know about the candidates/issues. Until then, it's largely awareness in most areas except Iowa and NH..

14. the only interesting thing about this poll
is that everyone is starting to catch up
to Lieberman in terms of national name
recognition; pretty soon, people who say
"well, he's got national name recognition"
are going to be met with enthusiastic "so?"s.

The big news here is that Dean is regularly
posting double digits in national polls,
which is a huge gain from his humble 4%
origin.

16. I'd LOVE TO SEE a poll
of the nonvoting public. I want to see who they'd like to run and would vote for. What would convince them to vote. I think that would be the most interesting poll of all. Has one ever been done? I might even pay to see that one.

18. Quinnipiac 2000: Hillary will lose Senate - it's a freeper poll
obsessed with Hillary. Last October they rushed to cash in on our distaste for her vote for war and polled her against Giuliani - gloating that Giuliani was ahead. All that weeks before actuall elections in which neither of two was running. Quinnipiac is trash and I wouldn't vote for Hillary in the primaries.

22. No, it's NY. A catholic University. Poll was reputable until assimilated
They present it as a national poll - but the Hillary obsession springs from their NY residence. It reads these days like Newsmax.
