Moore Surprised To Secure 'Sicko' Nomination

Michael Moore is amazed his movie Sicko has received an Academy Award nomination, because he thought he'd never be invited back after slamming U.S. President George W. Bush onstage in 2003.

Moore outraged many with his controversial speech, which Oscars producers cut short, when picking up the Best Documentary award for Bowling For Columbine. But the 53-year-old was pleased to hear his film about America's health care problems had picked up a Best Documentary Academy Award nomination on Tuesday.

He says, "I'm appreciative that they allowed me back in the building (Kodak Theater). If I'm fortunate enough to stand on that stage again, I will be true to myself and very gracious and grateful for the acknowledgment, but I would start by finishing the last 10 seconds of the previous speech." And the famously unstylish filmmaker adds, "I would thank my wardrobe designer and hair stylist."

8. I saw a headline that said Moore wouldn't cross the picket line.
However, I suspect the issue may be solved by the time the show is scheduled to go on. Stay tuned.

17. The non-famous people are losing work due to this.
I realize the temptation is to give free rein to schadenfreude when something like this happens, and perhaps you sincerely believe that the absence of awards shows is due punishment to corporations, self-important celebrities, etc. But working people have to have jobs to pay for housing, health care, and food, and the cancellation and/or scaling down of awards shows translates into tens of millions in lost business. Compare it to, say, how weather changes can ruin a season for people employed in the hospitality/tourism industries.

I'm not employed by any industry affected by the writers' strike, but if the company where I am employed lost a vast amount of clientele due to any reason, it could translate into very dire consequences for those of us in the cubicles.

16. He shouldn't be surprised at the nomination
"Sicko" is a great documentary. When I saw it in the theater people were laughing, crying and cheering at the end. It was a slam-dunk.

18. Great film, MM is great community leader in nw lower Michigan
Even the wingnuts in that most beauteous part of the nation must admit that Michael Moore has been a tremendous contributor to the community, including establishing the Traverse City Film Festival and refurbishing the State Theatre in downtown TC. http://www.traversecityfilmfest.org/

Thank you, Michael, and we'll be pulling for you here at DU. Can't wait to visit TC this summer and retire there eventually.

19. prediction
If Sicko doesn't win, there will be numerous posts here claiming an organized conspiracy against him.

And if Sicko does win, over in freeper land there will be numerous posts claiming an organized conspiracy in his favor.

Personally, I hope he wins.

21. They're not inviting him back to speak.
They're inviting him to sit in the audience.

They may not want to let him on the stage again--but if it happens, I'll see it on YouTube.
