The News & Observer will outsource 16 advertising jobs in the production and display of design ads, the Raleigh newspaper said Thursday.
Al Autry, the N&O's senior vice president of advertising, said in an e-mail to employees that the jobs would be outsourced to Affinity Express. The company, based in Chicago, does work for more than 3,000 clients worldwide and has large production centers in India and the Philippines.
"There are monetary savings, but it truly is an investment for the future to meet the needs of readers and advertisers," Autry said in an interview. "It's not just about saving money now. It's a strategic investment in the future."
The 16 lost positions will come from a pool of 26 advertising employees. Those workers can apply to get one of the 10 remaining jobs. Those who do not keep their current jobs can work with the N&O to find positions elsewhere with the newspaper, Autry said.
Those who leave the newspaper will be offered a severance package.
