UPDATE: BBC: 3 US troops killed in Thursday morning Baghdad attack
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3092025.stm

Three American soldiers have been killed in Iraq, a US military spokesman has said.
The attack early on Thursday took place in northern Iraq.

Their deaths bring to five the number of US troops killed since the deaths of Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday and Qusay, in a shoot-out with American forces on Tuesday.

The Bush administration has said it will release photographs of the sons to prove they were killed by American troops.

Washington hopes evidence that Uday and Qusay Hussein are dead will undermine resistance to coalition forces in Iraq.

Referring to the latest attack, spokesman Corporal Todd Pruden told the French news agency, AFP, the soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division had come under small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire.

He did not specify where the attack took place.

1. Where's that idiot now?
Where's the idiot that was around earlier tonight, with all 30 of his right-wing posts, crowing about how our troops would be safer now that we've killed Saddam's boys?

5. Safer now?!
He will prolly argue that without killing the Saddam boys, it would have been 6 dead US soldiers today.

We should give that guy a M16 and a kick in his butt so he flies all way over to Baghdad so he can do something productive.

3. CORRECTION: northern iraq not Baghdad, SO....
I said Baghdad attack in haste since the earlier attack post I posted was from witnesses in BAGHDAD... so these are TWO separate attacks here.

9. Yes, there are two separate attacks, check the Reuters story I posted
The attack in Mosul was the second deadly attack on the 101st since the take-no-prisoners raid on Saddam's sons.

U.S. Soldiers Killed in Area where Saddam Sons Died
Thu July 24, 2003 02:47 AM ET

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Three U.S. soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division operating in northern Iraq were killed in a rifle and grenade attack Thursday, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Soldiers from the 101st, based in Mosul, killed Saddam Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay in a raid on a house in the city Tuesday. At least one shadowy group has vowed to avenge their deaths.

"Three 101st Airborne Division soldiers were killed in a small arms and RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) attack," the spokesman at U.S. headquarters in Baghdad said by telephone.

That brings the total of soldiers killed by the enemy to 44 since Washington declared an end to major combat on May 1.

It was the second fatal attack on the 101st since the massive raid, which was backed by rocket-firing helicopters and killed Uday and Qusay after they barricaded themselves into a house.

10. But, but, but
my Lord said that no more of the peasants in the
infantry would get killed now that the big bad
boogeymen were killed....

By the way, all jokes aside, (and this is no jocking matter
how long until the actual Tet offensive begins?) Oh for
those missing the reference, in 1923 the Iraqis rose against
the British, it was not pretty and I expect something
very similar here.

11. MSNBC: Three U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq
Three U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq, July 24 — Three American soldiers were killed in Iraq, a military spokeswoman said Thursday. The latest deadly attack came a day after President Bush hailed the deaths of Saddam Hussein’s two eldest sons as the clearest sign yet that “the former regime is gone and will not be coming back.”

THE SOLDIERS, part of the 101st Airborne Division, were operating in northern Iraq, when they came under attack from gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades.

The timing of the attack wasn’t known, V Corps in Baghdad said, adding that reports were still coming in from the field.

The 101st participated in the assault and siege of a house in Mosul where Saddam’s sons Odai and Qusai were killed Tuesday, along with a teenager believed to be Qusai’s son, and a bodyguard.

There has been concern among troops that the deaths of the brothers may embolden insurgents in Iraq and result in more attacks, which happen daily.

The deaths brought to 158 the number of American servicemen killed in action since the war began March 20, 11 more than the death toll in the 1991 Gulf War.

21. This burns me
"The deaths brought to 158 the number of American servicemen killed in action since the war began March 20... ."

And those men and women killed in accidents and by friendly fire are once again treated as if they never existed and their sacrifice means nothing!

Are we entering the "fourth period" of the war now? The media sets the counter back to zero every chance it gets and starts reporting only deaths since the last big "victory". Grrrrr.

22. Since
is a key word here. 158 dead since 20 march, 100 dead since mission accomplished 1 may. I've lost count of how many dead since "bring em on". Five dead since we roached out saddam's sons. I told the marshmallow woman last night the idiot* was making another mission accomplished speech, I have the feeling we will reach 100 dead a lot faster this time.

24. Awful
Can you imagine how it must feel if you have a loved one over in Iraq? I mean every morning I checked to see if any of our soliders were killed and I always think of the families. How horrific it is to be them and then to wait to see if its their loved one.
