3. That's cuz they hired KBR to do all their cooking for them
So they have to find something for the food service people to do.

5. Not Just Cooks
I was talking to a young vet with a third of his head missing at the VA Hospital in Madison, and he told me that a lot of support personnel in Iraq were drafted into doing dangerous missions... hardly any combat training, etc. You must remember how it was - just get enough warm bodies out there; the top guns don's really give a shit who they are. I know Navy boatswains mates and engine guys thrown into ground patrol ( the meat grinder ). Despicable.
We're just not getting the whole story back here... not even close. I read the foreign press, and the amount of bad stuff that isn't being reported in the American media is huge. Reminds me of the daily press shows in Nam, where the military spinners told the press how great things were going, how the enemy body counts were so great, etc., while leaving out the bad stuff. Same thing going on in Iraq and Afghanistan now... Petraeus(sp) I believe immediately put the kabosh on what we get to find out as soon as he took over.
Have we ever had a more worthless Congress, in terms of upholding the Constitution, rule of law, and the people's wants and needs? I doubt it.
Keep an eye on this new "treaty" that bushcheney are cooking up with Iraq, bypassing Congress and tying the USA into many, many more years of military presence in Iraq, and making it impossible for the next prez to break the treaty. Scary stuff.

7. It is pointless even to lament about these things
They have an empire to keep and the empire is crumbling as we speak, the budget deficit, the credits and other bad stuff. And they can't pull out of Iraq because this is the end of Pax Americana which the democrats/republicans can't afford.

2. 26 y.o. private, less than a year in
Had he hung onto life a few more months, he would have made SSG.

I wonder what it was that persuaded a 26 y.o. to enter the army at this time.

4. The economy?
Just a guess but jobs are short and the cost of living has skyrocketed.

I know a man in his thirties who joined last year for this very reason. Desperate people tend to do desperate things.
