PETA Requests Vegetarian Diet in Jail for Cannibalism Suspect
By KENNETH DEAN
Staff Writer

Sheriff's officials were astounded Thursday by a letter requesting the man accused of murdering his girlfriend and possibly participating in cannibalism be placed on a vegetarian diet to keep him from being "involved in any senseless killing" while incarcerated.

The letter was faxed to the Smith County Sheriff's Jail from the national headquarters of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Thursday morning.

7. Is PETA a singular noun...
...or plural?

Also, do vegetables scream when you eat them alive?

12. Good question. I always assumed that...
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 10:20 PM by Kutjara
...since the first word is "people" it would be plural, but the organization as a whole could be regarded as a single entity.

Not sure if vegetables scream; they may make noise so slowly that it's ultra subsonic for all we know. Like the Ents, it may take them a loooooong time to get around to screaming. By which point, of course, it's too late.

Capt. Gary Pinkerton, Jail Administrator
Smith County Jail

Dear Capt. Pinkerton:

... As you know, McCuin allegedly killed his girlfriend, cut up and boiled parts of her body, and may have consumed parts of her corpse. Tragically, every day in homes and restaurants across the U.S., humans cut up, cook, and devour the corpses of chickens, pigs, fish, and cows. Only in a culture where people routinely kill and eat living, feeling beings would anyone even think to kill and eat a human loved one ...

It is up to you to prevent McCuin from contributing to any more suffering and death by placing him on a healthy, humane vegetarian diet.

Please visit the Web site GoVeg.com to see video footage that depicts the cruelty of factory farming and to obtain vegetarian recipes. Vegetarian meals are healthy, cost-efficient, and easy to prepare. They also promote nonviolence, which is something that every prison needs. We also would be happy to help you design meatless meal plans for McCuin -- or even the entire prison ...

14. The guy is going for an insanity plea..
pretty clear when you look at his actions. There's no evidence that he actually cannibalized his GF, just that he tried to make it look that way. Why PETA would get involved with this is beyond me.

Give him a little taste of what he might be missing. . . On second thought, maybe a pork chop instead? I've heard that human meat tastes quite a bit like pork. . . . .

19. Bit more from letter and Sheriff. Eyeroll from me.
"It is up to you to prevent McCuin from contributing to any more suffering and death by placing him on a healthy, humane vegetarian diet," the letter by PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich reads.
(clip)
When asked how eating a hamburger compared to cannibalism, Friedrich said all meat is from a corpse. He further stated he believes McCuin could become violent if he ate meat and could kill. "Only in a culture where people routinely kill and eat living, feeling beings would anyone even think to kill and eat a human loved one," he said.

Smith said that in all of his years as sheriff there has not been one case of cannibalism in his jail, much less cannibalism caused by serving meat to the prisoners. "Nope, that has never happened," he said. "Besides (McCuin) is isolated so the only person he's going to bite is himself."

26. That was a good one!
After a hard day of reading all the press corps Hillary-hate (and the nascent Obama-hate), I needed a chuckle.

I've come to the conclusion that PeTA is one of those guerilla improv troupes, like NYC's Improv Everywhere.

:sarcasm:

PETA? They're idiots. They think this guy did whatever he did because he lives in a society that eats animals? Um, no. Try "He lives in a society in which people cook up meth."
