Judge orders halt to Bible distribution in school
Eight parents sued two years ago; Liberty Counsel plans to appeal

updated 2 hours, 47 minutes ago

ST. LOUIS - A federal judge has ruled that it's unconstitutional for a school district to allow the distribution of Bibles to grade school students.

For more than three decades, the South Iron School District in Annapolis, Mo., allowed representatives of Gideons International to give away Bibles in fifth-grade classrooms.

Eight parents sued two years ago and won a temporary injunction against the handouts.

4. Those 8 parents are indeed courageous to take this stand in the Bible Belt.
I might add that Catherine Perry is a very brave judge.:patriot:

I wonder if this Liberty Counsel would fight along side groups that handed out the Koran or Hindu or Buddist books for their right to do the same........Nah! B-)

8. What courage to stand up against these religious fanatics --- !!!
Of course, it is as clear to us as it is to them that if they can't "get 'em while they're young" . . . they ain't gonna get 'em.

Organized patriarchal religions also needs the acceptance of government schools to give them
legitimacy ---

Folks, there is no legitimacy in a "god" in the sky --- it's a personal belief system. That's all!

11. The library is the ONLY place a bible should be found in a public school
Lockers excepted.

19. It's probably been a long time since it was checked out, too.
Most kids who want to read it can find one at home. Those who don't have one at home can check out the one in the library.

The distribution of bibles in the classroom is clearly just another attempt to bully people into a specific sect's idea of Christianity...which is usually not very Christian.

15. giving them in classrooms is a little too far
Personally, I remember two businessmen just handing out those little New Testaments out on the campus paths at Indiana University; didn't bother me at all; even helped myself to one. But if dudes had been handing out the Koran, the Book of Mormon, the Nibelungenlied, whatever, I would have helped myself to those, too! (free is free)

But in class? That's a no-no.

18. excellent and totally approved
unless the Bible is been taught as a unit subject of a world civilizations or history course (to be equally balanced with other texts and perspectives), it has no place in schools.

And screw Gideons International for trying to be vultures on our kids!

We know you want to destroy it, defund it, discredit it, and turn it into a conduit for religious fanaticism, but the majority of the country doesn't agree with you.

29. The Gideons have been handing out
bibles in public schools since the 50's at least. I got one in the 1959 if I remember right. System has not collapsed yet.

26. If Christian bibles then why not the Koran, Bahava Gita, and other
World religion texts? I think this judge was intelligent enough to realize that someone might make this argument and it is a sound argument. If you allow one religion why not allow all religions?
I would not want these people to give my child a bible without my permission. When they are 18, its their business, but until then..
