Lieberman Backs GOP's Collins In Maine
Source: Courant.com

PORTLAND, Maine — - In 2006, Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine campaigned for Connecticut colleague Joseph I. Lieberman, the former Democrat who won re-election as an independent after losing his party's primary.

Now, as Collins faces what many see as a tough re-election challenge from Democrat Tom Allen, Lieberman has returned the favor by backing Collins and raising money for her campaign.

Political experts and the candidates themselves are split on how Lieberman's involvement in the 2008 race could affect the outcome.

Some suggest that having a former Democrat in her corner could rally swing voters to the two-term senator by distancing her from the policies of President Bush.

18. If that was true...
... he wouldn't have the numbers to win. Registered Democrats and unaffiliated/independent voters largely outweigh the number of registered Republicans in Connecticut. Thus, Lieberman had to (and did) have enough idiot fooled-after-all-this-time-to-know-better (or possibly still just pro-war) Democrats and "He-brings-home-the-pork-so-lets-give-him-the-power-to-do-whatever-he-wants" independents cross over to edge out Lamont to victory.

54. Apparently, he got 71% of the republican vote according to exit poll.
From WaPo:

Lieberman, who according to a CNN exit poll won 71 percent of the Republican vote, has said that he will continue to caucus with Senate Democrats.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/07/AR2006110701593.html

That's an enormous percentage of republicans voting for a (so-called) Democrat.

Still, any Dem that voted for Lieberman is a fool.

17. "Most"...
... but not all... and not exactly by a stunningly overwhelming number also, though they would vote for Lamont by a stunningly overwhelming percent if given the chance to do it over today. More independents would also side with Lamont if they had the chance to do it over, as well. But it's too late for that.

The question posted by the OR "How could good Dems in CT vote for Lieberman?" is a valid one. Ironically, more Republicans would vote for Lieberman today than actually did on election day.

Nor would I call Chuck Hagel being a "rat" for speaking out when he knows the country is heading in the wrong direction. I don't necessarily trust him (especially considering ES&S), but I wouldn't call him a "rat" for standing up to the party line those times he actually has.

64. what idiocy. Jim Jeffords was typical of a New England republican
of a different age when the party was had some sort of diversity. He left the party with the overwhelming approval of Vermonters. And we count in that. Unless you're a Vermonter, you don't. He didn't jump midstream either. He was betrayed and ostracized by his own party, repeatedly. He had a record in the House and Senate to be proud of. I agreed with the majority of his positons- on foreign policy, the environment, health and education. That's why I voted for him even when he was a republican. And when he became an independent, I cheered him on.

I saw Reid interviewed and he totally took up for the rat. I've never heard a party leader kiss the ass of a turncoat like that before.

RAY SUAREZ: When you and the other 99 members come back to work in the third week in January, it will still be 51-49. But Joe Lieberman, who caucuses with you, routinely votes against the Democrats on questions involving the war, and four other members are out running for president.

Can you muster your troops when need them? Has that been a challenge, having four Democratic members of the Senate out there on a campaign trail?

SEN. HARRY REID: First of all, Joe Lieberman, Joe Lieberman is my friend, and he is a good Democrat, votes with us on everything, except the war. So Joe Lieberman is easy to work with.

Once we have more than a one-seat majority Joe will be relegated to the back benches, where he truly belongs. I hate what he did after losing the primary but I appreciate that he gave us the majority leader. He can't be irrelevant too soon for me.
