Romney backpedals on statements - again
Source: MSNBC/AP

BOSTON - Mitt Romney, who earlier this year had to backpedal on his hunting exploits, is explaining himself again after claiming an endorsement he did not receive and saying he witnessed his father in civil rights marches he could not have seen.

"It's a figure of speech," Romney said Thursday after media inquiries into the Republican presidential contender's statement during his recent religion speech that he watched his father, the late Gov. George Romney of Michigan, march with Martin Luther King Jr.

1. Just wanted to take this opportunity to share with DUers that I saw my father
march into Egypt with Alexander's army.

Needless to say, it was highly memorable.

19. Don't you just love it when a pretty little pastey white boy....
born with a silver spoon in his mouth and a fancy suit with all that comes with it tries to "Come down to the common folk"? He's as awkward in the real world as real people are in his. Why is he trying to allign himself with the Civil Rights movement through his fathers work?

I also loved it when he said he pulled his car over and cried the day the Mormon church decided to let black men have the priesthood. Did he cry because he cared or because his pastey white world was changing?

I grew up Mormon and recall this "event" in the late 70's. The justification previously had been that "the blacks were not socially or morally READY for the responsibility of the priesthood, but now with the civil rights movement and their own progression, they had finally become smart and capable enough for this "mantle". The reality was that the Mormon church was about to lose it's non profit status if they hadn't relented, similar to the 1890's when they were trying to gain statehood and had to repeal polygamy in order to comply with the national pressure on this matter.

Mitt Romney is a card carrying (temple recommend which requires an ability to successfully feign belief in the doctrine, and be a full tithe payer, or at least SAY you're a full tithe payer) dyed in the wool Mormon and by his position and history has a lifetime of training in revisionist history, lying for the lord, and obfuscation.

This mighty nut-job has fallen a little ways from his father's oak tree, but they are not remotely in the same class of integrity or intellect. He will be the embarassment of the Mormon church and a joke in the Republican arena.

28. Yes -- I don't think the fundie nutbag percentage of Republicans are going
Edited on Sat Dec-22-07 04:39 PM by Old Crusoe
to take the Mormon affiliation easily, especially when they have an untable nutbag of their very own in Mike Huckabee, pimping for Jesus every 20 or 25 words tht comes out of his mouth.

Romney is a master panderer, but evidently it's hard for him to be both the pseydo-progressive Governor of Massachusetts AND a God-fearing, Jesus-loving wedge Republican. I wouldn't want the job.

He had the neighborhood focus in Massachusetts with its left-leaning demographics, but them Dems' dems just aren't the same in the other 49 states. He lends the impression that he's robotic and creepy, ill-prepared for the top job, and 100% artificial in his comments to the press and public. All his cash isn't going to buy him the one thing he could probably use right now -- an authentic personality.

30. Carl Rove's hand....
Mitt Romney is such a wooden puppet and mannequin. I highly suspect under all that makeup and shoe polish hairdo is none other than Jeb Bush with Carl Rove's hand up his arse and throwing his voice like a ventriloquist, hoping the world won't notice the big bulge in the back of Mitt/Jeb's pants.

27. During the 2000 campaign, the MSM would actually
make up things and say that Al Gore had said them and then claim he was a serial liar because of them. They harped and harped on the false notion that Gore had a problem with the truth, until theis most upright of all politicians was tarred as being a nonstop liar. But Mitt actually lies repeatedly and blatantly, and we hear about it only in passing, without its actually being labeled by the MSM as lying. No, it's just a misunderstanding that needs to be cleared up a bit.

Similarly, when new information would cause Kerry to change his position on something (which is called looking at facts and adjusting to reality as it is revealed), the MSM and the Republicans (same thing) tarred him as a "flip-flopper." But Mitt flip-flops so obviously and so frequently that it makes your head spin, and the MSM mention it only in passing, like it's no big deal.

I am thinking that Mitt must the corporate masters' anointed one this time.

32. Romney is not champion of Civil Rights....
If he truly wanted to walk in the footsteps of Dr. King he would support an amendment to the constitution that guranteed Gay's the same marriage rights as everyone else.... That is 21st century version of equality.
