Musician Ike Turner Dies at 76
Source: Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogrelike image as the man who brutally abused former wife and icon Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76.

"He did pass away this morning" at his home in San Marcos, in northern San Diego County, said Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner's musical career.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death, which was first reported by celebrity Web site TMZ.com.

Turner managed to rehabilitate his image somewhat in his later years, touring around the globe with his band the Kings of Rhythm and drawing critical acclaim for his work. He won a Grammy in 2007 in the traditional blues album category for "Risin' With the Blues."

3. Ike Turner dead at 76
Source: multiple news sources

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock 'n' roll pioneer Ike Turner, who rose to fame in the 1950s and became a star performing with his ex-wife Tina Turner, has died at age 76, said an official with the performer's management company.

"Ike Turner passed away this morning. He was at his home," in San Marcos, California, outside San Diego, said Scott Hanover of Thrill Entertainment.

Hanover did not have any further information about the cause of death.

Turner helped pioneer rock 'n' roll in 1951 when his band the Rhythm Kings recorded the song "Rocket 88," a tune widely regarded as the first record in the nascent genre. The Chess Records release was credited to the band's saxophone player Jackie Brenston "and his Delta Cats."

As a guitarist and pianist, Turner played with the likes of B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon in the 1950s. He married Annie Mae Bullock in 1958, she changed her name to Tina, and they enjoyed such hits as "River Deep, Mountain High," "Proud Mary" and "Nutbush City Limits."

The pair won a Grammy in 1972 for "Proud

7. I saw them live (with the Ikettes) in Ann Arbor, early 'seventies, and
she just electrified the place. I had just separated from a verbally abusive husband and I was painfully aware of how he demeaned and insulted her while they were performing together onstage. It seemed so obvioius that he was incredibly jealous of how much the crowd loved her, and how indifferent they were to him. And he made her pay, didn't he.

8. Tina got the last word however.
I'm sorry that Ike died. He was a troubled person to say the least. Thank god ... well in Tina's case Buddah she got out and got out alive. She's one of my idols. I was abused in two of my relationships. I don't hold any ill feelings ..... well not to ONE of them. The other one .... well, I'd just like to tell him the fuck off ONE last time.

14. Abusive relationships...and the likes of Ike...
...I've had my share. And Ms. Tina is also one of my idols. Still is, ever will be.

As for Abuser Ike - well....no comment. As for my exAbusers....

9. He was always very nice to me when I was younger.
When I was around eleven - 15 he and Tina and the review played in a club near my house. The musicians used to let some of us kids help them load in. Of all the people who played Ike was one of the nicest to us kids. As far as his wifes, I only heard one side of that story, not that I doubt he could be violent. But like I said, he was always nice to me, so was Tina and the Ikettes were a joy to be around.
Oh and we might not have BB King and host of others if not for Ike Turner. He was very important in filling up Sun Records stable.

13. Possibly a bad man, but he contributed far more than his ex-wife
He was very important to the development of American music
Rest In Peace

15. Yeah,well it's pretty easy to
be "important to the development of American music" when you're not trying to do it with a fat lip and a broken arm.

And his ex-wife, after coming from nothing and being abused in EVERY way possible by Ike, STILL managed to make one of the greatest comebacks in entertainment history at 50-something. And did it with class and style.

16. I don't deny that Tina has class and style and is a wonderful ENTERTAINER...
and I'm not denying that she overcame horrible abuse, but their contributions carry different weights.
Much like the fact that the horrible fascist Ezra Pound is STILL a far more important poet than the liberal, but wretched Rod McKeun.
It's an uncomfortable truth, but an undeniable truth.
