Fujimori jailed for abusing power
Source: BBC

Last Updated: Wednesday, 12 December 2007, 00:11 GMT

The former Peruvian President, Alberto Fujimori, has been sentenced to six years in prison and fined $92,000 (£45,000) for abuse of power.

He was found guilty of ordering the removal of sensitive video and audio tapes from a flat belonging to the wife of his former intelligence chief.

Mr Fujimori is the first ex-Peruvian head of state to have been convicted of crimes committed while in office.

The sentence comes a day after he went on trial for human rights violations.

2. It looks as if they're giving him the royal Pinochet treatment, doesn't it?
He also has gone the time-honored Pinochet route by insisting he's not a well dictator, too. "Hey, you know what Pinochet had? Well, I got it, too!" We can only hope!

At least he's in the slammer, where he belongs right now, and I've read there are also more charges down the road which could be very serious, adding lotsa time to this sentence.

Hope they aren't just bidding their time, hoping the short attention span of the public will allow them to forget about pursuing the other charges.

Hope Fujimori will have tons of his former death squad members there to help keep him company. It's only right.

6. Sure is surprising that all they got him on was stealing tapes from a spy's wife

when he did so much harm to his country.

Here is hoping they are just starting small and working their way up while Fujimori is somewhere they can keep an eye on him.

7. Alan Garcia belongs in prison as well.
He perpetrated the massacre of hundreds of political prisoners in 1986. There are many crimes to be atoned for in Peru. It will take another decade or more for the people there to come to terms with things though.

8. Fujimori will be tried for human rights abuses
now he's in prison, he won't be skipping out.

My question is who was above him? Who were his puppet masters?

I hope the trial proceedings will be available.
