Army general killed in Lebanon blast 34 minutes ago

BEIRUT (AFP) - An army general was among at least four people killed on Wednesday in a roadside bomb that also injured seven others in a Christian suburb on the outskirts of Beirut, a security source told AFP.

"General Franois El Hajj was killed in the blast and several other people were injured, including his driver," the source, who did not wish to be identified said.

According to several other sources, Hajj was tipped to replace the army's top commander General Michel Sleiman, who is the frontrunner to become Lebanon's next president.

Earlier a Lebanese Red Cross official told AFP that four people were killed and seven were wounded in the morning blast that rocked the suburb of Baabda, southeast of Beirut. An AFP correspondant at the scene said the blast took place outside the Baabda municipality building, causing severe damage to the face and destroying several cars parked nearby.

1. Not Any General
He was the Chief of Operations for the Lebanese Army. Michel Sleiman, the head of the Army, is the current consensus candidate for the Lebanese Presidency. Sleiman vowed to maintain security and order in Lebanon as the country has had not President for almost a month. His Chief of Operations was killed, near the Presidential Palace of Lebanon, in one of the most heavily secured areas in the entire country. It's a hell of a message- "If we want to get you, or cause trouble, we can; and nobody can stop us."
