Spitzer approval falls to record low: poll
Source: Crains NY Business

Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s approval rating sank to its lowest level ever as a majority of New York state voters said they wouldn’t vote to re-elect him in 2010, according to a Siena Research Institute poll released Monday.

The governor’s reputation has a long road to recovery: only 27% of voters say he is doing a good or excellent job. His favorability rating has dropped to 36% -- down from 41% in November and at its lowest level ever in a Siena poll.

...snip...

When asked about the 2010 election, 56% of voters said they would prefer “someone else” rather then re-elect Mr. Spitzer.

“Voters are continuing to lose faith in their Governor,” said Steven Greenberg, Siena New York Poll spokesman. “He’s dug himself a deep hole and so far has not been able to find a ladder.”

Spitzer followed up the license plate fiasco with a mention that he was going to focus on Gay marriage, and while I support the concept, this is seriously not the time to bring up another contentious issue that will require coalition building.

1. Politicians nationwide are facing low approval ratings
Few politicians are unscathed at the people's disappointment and wrath.

2. from a NYer, my point of view of what happened:
he screwed up. even if it wasn't him directly but people connected to him. We (I) had a vision of him, the impression he wanted to give, of a politician with the peoples interests at heart, without the stain of 'the corrupt politician'. Then came the tactics that made me think, "WTF?"

5. god, he disappoints me so much
he really is a miserable failure as a governor. I just hope he doesn't run for re-election and decides to step down in 2010.

8. I strongly believe Spitzer will recover
He's a smart guy, and will erase all his fumblings before the next election.

9. He is Tone Deaf
His Campaign motto was "Day One Everything Changes", clearly meant to give the dysfunctional state government a wake up call. Fine, everyone was fed up with Albany's inability to do anything. And I mean anything. But what does he do? The whole Bruno mess, the ill timed drivers licenses for illegals ( and never mind the merits, if any) it was right before the elections and he created an issue to be used against other Democrats who busted their tails for him.

And now, after all of Long Island busted their tails for him, (against a guy FROM Long Island, no less) he turns around and introduces a fare hike plan for mass transit that doesn't raise subway fares, but raises the railroad fares substantially. Thus giving double whammy to people who pay more than $300 a month to commute to work and then have to pay sky high gas prices to get around the burbs where they live. (And please don't give me that's what you get for living in the burbs, cause you need a whole lot more money to live in NYC and send your kid to a halfway decent school)

He really has been a disappointment to people who supported him.

I hope he gets his act together soon.
