U.S. and British policies like apartheid-era government: Tutu
Source: Reuters

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Archbishop Desmond Tutu accused the United States and Britain on Monday of pursuing policies like those of South Africa's apartheid-era government by detaining terrorism suspects without trial.

At an event to commemorate the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDR), the Nobel laureate said the detention of suspected al Qaeda and Taliban members at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was a "huge blot on a democracy."

"Whoever imagined that you would hear from the United States and from Britain the same arguments for detention without trial that were used by the apartheid government," Tutu told a news conference in Cape Town.

Tutu is chairman of the Elders, a group of prominent international statesmen that includes former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela and his Mozambican-born wife Graca Machel.

1. There's a system of apartheid existing right now in the USA.
It has to do with the way aid and money are funneled, and the way
voting precincts are mapped, and the way profiling and voter caging
occurs. Then there are those pesky ARMS mortgages.

I don't know what amazes me more: that apartheid is occurring or that
we're letting it happen.

2. Good point!
Tutu's statement resonates in many ways:

"'Whoever imagined that you would hear from the United States and from Britain the same arguments for detention without trial that were used by the apartheid government,' Tutu told a news conference in Cape Town."

Whoever imagined that we would see any of the shit we are seeing today, as U.S. domestic and foreign policy? Shows you what election fraud can do, and what rigged election systems are for.

3. We've always had it. It's just more overt right now than it has been
for two decades. The gloves are off.

4. I didn't want to believe it, but I think you are right
I do believe it's the Bushies and their Enablers agains the rest of us.

They have all the guns, money, snooping equipemtn and sniperscopes. And they are itching for a little permission from authority to use it on the Jews...ahem...the Liberals (I sometimes get my totalitarian incarnations mixed up, they are so similar in so many ways, other than violence and overt racism)

5. I saw the similarities years ago....
having experienced them as a child, and stated so in many posts.

In fact, in general, the right-wingers in this country remind me a lot of the right-wingers in that country at that time.
