Code Pink protester under arrest again

By S.A. Miller
December 8, 2007
A Code Pink activist — detained and deported from Pakistan for protesting there — was arrested within hours of his return to the United States for disrupting a Senate hearing on Pakistan. U.S. Capitol Police dragged Tighe Barry, a member of the feminist antiwar group known for its members clad in pink T-shirts and pink tiaras, from the hearing Thursday after he shouted criticism of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

Mr. Barry was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said.

A day earlier, Mr. Barry and Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin were arrested and ordered deported by Pakistani security agents in Lahore, where the pair joined demonstrations against Mr. Musharraf and the emergency rule he imposed Nov. 3. Ms. Benjamin and Mr. Barry said they were kidnapped at gunpoint by agents of the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence, held for about four hours and then ordered deported.

Almost immediately upon returning to Washington, Mr. Barry went to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing and disrupted testimony by Richard A. Boucher, assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian affairs. The protesters had requested to testify before the panel, but the witness list had been finalized, Code Pink spokeswoman Dana Balicki said.
