Lawyers observe complete boycott of courts (Pakistan)

RAWALPINDI: Lawyers observed a complete boycott of courts on Thursday to protest against the emergency and deposition of judges who refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order.

Lawyers demanded immediate release of Supreme Court Bar Association President Aitzaz Ahsan, Ali Ahmed Kurd and Justice (r) Tariq Mehmood.

Hundreds of lawyers gathered at the Rawalpindi District Courts and took out a protest procession led by Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) Rawalpindi chapter President Sardar Azmatullah and other senior lawyers. The protestors took a round of the district courts and later blocked the Kuchery Chowk for half an hour.

Police closed the main entrances of the district courts but the lawyers managed to rally on the road using the entrance of City District Nazim offices ...

Thousands of American lawyers call for rule of law in Pakistan

Washington: More than 10,000 American lawyers have signed a petition, with more expected to join them, to President Pervez Musharraf urging him to “restore the Constitution of Pakistan, reinstate Pakistan’s Supreme Court justices and free those lawyers and civil leaders who have been wrongly jailed.”

The petition prepared by the American Bar Association, will be presented to the embassy of Pakistan on 13 December by Association president William H Neukom, who said in a statement that “each day, pressure brought by Americans and people of other nations is forcing Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf to soften his assault on the rule of law.
