The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Like a ticking time bomb, the national debt is an explosion waiting to happen. It's expanding by about $1.4 billion a day — or nearly $1 million a minute.

What's that mean to you?

It means almost $30,000 in debt for each man, woman, child and infant in the United States.

1. I would like
to spend a minute's worth
of that debt. They can just
put my minute on the books as
some more of that unaccounted
for missing money.

6. I'm surprised anyone noticed
here are the "national debt" headlines for the past 8 years. Damn few.

The estimated population of the United States is 303,701,374
so each citizen's share of this debt is $30,112.99.

The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$1.49 billion per day since September 29, 2006

9. What Would It Take To Turn This Around?
Cease operations in Iraq and Afghanistan would go a long ways towards that goal but it would only be a start. We should consider withdrawing our troops from stations in Europe, Japan and Korea. Only fear keeps them there. Now to develop a balanced budget here at home. Our bloated Federal Government needs to be reduced. I've heard interesting ideas about eliminating the IRS and going with a flat tax, income tax.

Problem is the overspending is endemic with both parties. In efforts to get re-elected, members of congress pride themselves in throwing bones to the electorate. With a balance budget requiring them to get it right there would be some changes. Proposes that increase spending would have to be justified with reductions of spending in other areas.

13. Of course it isn't news
looming economic breakdown, working on 10 Trillion national debt, trade deficits reaching toward 1 trillion per year...

Bushco wants to switch to a new currency...but we wouldn't agree to that unless there seemed no other choice, right?

18. dudes, we owe more than we live on
in simple math-

2 adults = $60,000 owed on debt
disability payment, per year= $14,800

Can we all just declare bankruptcy and start over?

Edit: As a comparison with Canada, you can see both Canada and the US making similar improvements in their fiscal positions during the Clinton years, but then you can see the obvious impacts of Y2K on the US only:

20. So, in the course of 24 hours, we'd rack up enough in debt to pay for a $5 meal for every American.
Of course, that'd be ... SOCIALIST!!!!

But blowing up foreigners and corporate tax breaks are more important.

We pay more in interest on our debt than all social programs combined except Social Security which pays it's own way plus...
