World faces "cyber cold war" threat

LONDON (Reuters) - A "cyber cold war" waged over the world's computers threatens to become one of the biggest threats to security in the next decade, according to a report published on Thursday.

About 120 countries are developing ways to use the Internet as a weapon to target financial markets, government computer systems and utilities, Internet security company McAfee said in an annual report.

Intelligence agencies already routinely test other states' networks looking for weaknesses and their techniques are growing more sophisticated every year, it said.

Governments must urgently shore up their defenses against industrial espionage and attacks on infrastructure.

2. Reality translation:

The oppressive western government have had it up to their ears with peons having access to information unfiltered by their Masters.. so they must rage a war of fear about the web to justify the ridiculas measures they are going to take in the next few years to clamp down on Internet usage.

Stage one: flood the news with scare story's about how the web is a terrorist tool, both in terms of spreading propaganda AND in attacking the valuable stock markets or whatever.. no need to be overly specific, but make sure people get that their pocket books are in the firing line.

Stage two: perhaps some shady legislation is needed, like um.. thought crimes

stage three: make certain everyone knows their Internet use can and will be monitored, brainwash enough fox news/republicans/DLC types into believing we should be monitored.

End result is they might not have to clamp down so hard thus keeping the appearance of freedom that everyone cherishes so much.. a few silent arrests for offenders from time to time wont upset the flock too much.
