U.S. cannot impose vision on Mideast, Bush says

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush on Wednesday told CNN he would personally "facilitate" peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, saying the formation of a democratic Palestinian state was the best way to bring peace to the region.

"Ultimately, if this can be done, if the state can be laid out -- what the state should look like -- then it gives people like President Abbas the chance to go to the Palestinians and say, 'You can have their vision of violence or this vision of peace, take your pick.' "

"America can't impose our vision on the two parties," Bush said.

"If that happens, then there's not going to be a deal that will last."

Much too late. Once again, of course, there's the defense that "Clinton did it, too," except Clinton actually was involved in the Middle East peace process earlier in his presidency.

How is behind this whole thing? My guess is that it's Rice. She looked into the mirror one morning and thought "Oh shit, I sold my soul to the devil and all I have to show for it is a reputation as the loyal crony of a clueless asshat who has done more to screw up the country and the world more than all the other presidents combined." And so she came up with this plot for an 11th hour legacy--she's going to settle the Arab-Israeli conflict once and for all!

As if this administration could ever get any concessions from Israel. As if it had any credibility at all with any of the Arab partners (except the Saudis). An honest broker is what's needed, and that's not anyone in this administration. It's time to bring the Norwegians back in.

The other possibility is that this is an attempt by the administration to get things so badly derailed that Armageddon starts in the Middle East, which will, of course, bring about the return of Jesus and the Rapture. I, for one, cannot wait to be left behind.
