New York hunger levels 'rising'
Source: BBC

Over 1.3 million people, one in six New Yorkers, cannot afford enough food, with queues at soup kitchens getting longer, anti-poverty groups say.

The New York City Coalition Against Hunger says the number of people who use food pantries and soup kitchens in the city increased by 20% in 2007.

Some of the food distribution points are struggling to meet demand.

The coalition blames the situation mainly on increased poverty as well as government cutbacks in food aid.

2. I was in NYC the other day.
First time in approx. 12 years, at least. The economic stratification is so striking. I was there with DU'er Tace, who just moved out of there after 30 years of Manhattan living. Why? Well, for a better life in the woods, surely, but it has become unaffordable for all but those who make the highest of salaries.

I must say, stick up the ass syndrome seems to be a rampant epidemic there, too.

I think I liked Manhattan better when it smelled of urine.

5. The food banks and agencies that try to help the poor and the hungry
have seen their donations drop down to practically nothing. What does that tell you? It tells me that the people who supported those agencies with donations are hurting for money and can no longer do their part (hell, last night I could only afford a $5.00 food bag for the Food Bank myself). But those that have all that money, the ones that bush** rigged up the system to favor, are they picking up the slack. HELL NO. That is not what they do. They figure that if we're busy trying to find a way to feed ourselves and our families we can't spare the time or the energy to keep track of all their shennanigans and schemes. It's a foolproof distraction.

Keep the peasantry busy scraping for survival and they won't be messing with the country's 'royal' class.

9. I can believe it...
We delivered the food donations from our drive on Tuesday and the food bank director said she saw a 30% increase from September to October of THIS year.

Yeah it's bad
