Davis: I'll Win Calif. Recall Election
Jul 23, 4:11 PM EDT

By BETH FOUHY
Associated Press Writer

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Saying he realizes he hasn't "done everything perfect" as governor, Gov. Gray Davis said Wednesday he would fight and win a recall election that was poised to be certified as early as Wednesday evening.

"I'll own up to my mistakes - I haven't done everything perfect," Davis said in an interview with The Associated Press. "But I do believe we have to stay in the direction voters want."

Davis called the Republican-led recall effort a "a hostile takeover by the right," and said that despite widespread unhappiness with his job performance - his approval ratings have hovered in the low 20s in most recent polls - he felt confident voters would say no to replacing him.

"Remember, there's a lot more people willing to vote against the recall than there are who think I'm doing a good job," Davis said. "If you look at those voters, they say, 'it's not fair to blame this on the governor.' It's that sense of fairness that I think will carry the day."

1. Is it true?
That the lieutenant Governnor will take over if the governor is recalled in Cali.? Is it true that Davis could resign, allow his sucessor to take over, and derail the recall effort?

3. Davis will not and should not resign.
Why should he? He's too conservative for my taste and for many Democrats, but he hasn't earned a recall, that's for sure. Don't worry too much about his defeat--if you're in California however, I recommend linking up with your local Democratic clubs.

6. I don't want him to resign.
If the polling suggests that he will definately be recalled, I'd like to make sure that the Democrats retain control of California. If the polling is 60%-70% in favor of recall, I say he should bite the bullet.

18. The polling favors the recall as long as there is NOT a Repub
governor. When one sees Davis versus Simon or Davis versus Issa, polling does NOT favor the recall.

4. As I understand it, the law reads
that the Lt. Gov. MAY call a special election IF APPROPRIATE. This combined with the wording of other statutes and the standard implementation of those statutes indicates that Bustamante could CHOOSE to not have a special election and simply fill the Gov. position himself, and then backfill the Lt. Gov. position following normal procedures.

8. So, it's up to....
....the Lieutenant Governor if the recall elected governor assumes the governorship or if he will assume it himself?

13. There's a simultaneous recall and election of a replacement gov.
So, there's one question -- Should the Gov. be recalled?

And then another -- If the Gov. is recalled, whom should replace him? That's when the Repugs get to vote for Ahhh-nold.

It's all on one ballot. So weird.

2. Indeed, he will win.
I swear, those GOPers are crazy. November 2002 was a banner year for them here in CA--and they lost everything. White turnout was proportionately higher than in years, Democrats were not showing up at the polls. They think they can pull this coup off--but they will not.

Davis ain't stupid. He'll have every progressive constituency--labor, people of color, gays--mobilized as never before, by holding in front of them the threat of a far right takeover. It won't hurt that another Connerly racial initiative will share the ballot.

7. You know, those Repubs lost
with their Simon Legree fellow. Didn't want Riodrian either. Who wants a foreginer in the Gov's house? Come on Californian's do we really need another "actor" like Reagan? Hell, no! And that crook Issa fissa what's his face. Considering all the crooks in the WH, he's their man. Get him in and good-bye Sequoia Nat'l Forest, hello coastal drilling. Here's our state on a silver plate while smirky chimp boy rubs his hands. It doesn't matter that they lost, they're going to try to usurp Sacramento come hell or high water. We say NO!

11. 1982 Governor's race
Wasn't Bradley's defeat to George Deukmajian partially due to a gun control ballot intiative that brought out the NRA partisans en masse?

5. He hasn't "done everything perfect" !!!
That is a real understatement. Somebody better step up soon, or Issa will be the next Governor almost be default.

17. Exactly what has he done??
Wilson enacted the power deregulation, set up the faulty energy plan and Bush and Cheney's good buddy Kenny Boy Lay and his thugs proceeded to loot the state with Cheney and Bush's assistance. Gray didn't do it. The Bush Crime Family did the damage to the state.

19. No, Issa will never be governor.
That however does nothing to help Davis. Issa is no more then a red herring,

Californians would never give the governorship to Issa through a recall he had finainced himself. That is too close to buying the office. That however has no bearing on the other alternatives.

I am guessing Arnold does not join the race. That leaves the way clear for Rhiordon and he will be very difficult for Gray to beat. That's why Davis had to spend $10 million in the republican primary to block his nomination in 2000.

Feinstein could hold the state, Penetta also probably would win. Maculiffe speaking for the party has however decreed NO other democrat candidates then Davis shall file.

It's insane. Sink or swim with Gray Davis. They better hope the deckchairs float.

10. brave words for a man whose approval rating is in the low 20s
"If you look at those voters, they say, 'it's not fair to blame this on the governor.' It's that sense of fairness that I think will carry the day."

sounds like wishful thinking to me. i don't think "fairness to the governor" is a real high priority item in most voters' minds.

15. Exactly.
That's why those repukes spent all the money to recall Davis. Once the touch screens are in place it's a done deal.

and all the poor actors, liars and ex-felons will crawl back
in their holes. I hope this is the end of the Republican
party in California.
