McCain answered woman who rapped Clinton

1 hour, 13 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says he respects Hillary Rodham Clinton and that he said as much when a woman used the word "bitch" to describe her.

"How do we beat the bitch?" the woman asked Monday at a McCain event in South Carolina.

McCain laughed along with the crowd as he said, "May I give the translation?"

"That's an excellent question," he added. "I respect Senator Clinton. I respect anyone who gets the nomination of the Democratic Party."

On Tuesday, CNN's Rick Sanchez raised the question of whether McCain should have admonished the woman, and McCain's campaign criticized that criticism on Wednesday.

1. Not that McCain has much chance, but I really think this will
hurt him... She is his colleague after all and even the nastiest RWer probably was "schooled" in public respect for women, no matter what they do/say in private.

Just one more incidence of cowardice from the once "heroic" McCain.

4. This business of making candidates responsible for their supporters'
antics is silly. McCain did exactly what was called for.

Now don't make me defend that warmongering POS again.

5. Right On!
The media scum are looking at everything and anything to create news bits to fill 24 hours of immature banter. McCain just has to be himself without extra help to expose arrogance and his deep desire to kill everyone who doesn't agree with him.

A Barbara Bush make over Mother McCain tells the family stroy.

7. I watched the tape and I respectfully disagree with you....he laughed, he
flipped around for a while, he never denounced this woman's rudeness. He should immediately have said that her statement was inappropriate and unkind. McCain is a fool..he never defended his adopted child when the same kind of people called her names. He is an enabler of racists and sexists.

8. Well
that woman probably donated generously to his campaign, and honestly -- if you were in his shoes would you have smacked her down and embarrassed the hell out of her?

Of course it was rude and distasteful. But I don't know that we're all responsible for calling everyone out who acts that way. I could spend most of my day doing that.

9. I would have said the following: "I appreciate your strong support but I must
say that I respect and admire Mrs. Clinton as a first lady, a senator, a wife, and a mother. I would very much like to beat her in a presidential race but I will do it on issues and not on name-calling". BTW, I would bet the farm that Bill Clinton would never have let pass such a remark about Mrs. McCain. The right wing of this country has descended into the sewer.

10. But McCain is not everyone, he is a candidate for president and he sets the tone of his campaign.

It reminded me of 2 things. Barbara Bush calling a female Democratic vp candidate a bitch and then claiming she had said witch; and McCain at a podium telling his Republican audience a nasty joke about Chelsea Clinton's parentage in election 2000, and seeming to think it was great fun.

Honestly, I think a candidate who is unable to make it clear in public that he does not agree with demeaning a woman on the basis of her gender either agrees with such name-calling or isn't clear-thinking enough to be president.

Frankly I think it is probably not easy to embarass a woman who calls a female candidate a bitch.

Be interesting to see the reaction if some Democratic candidate supporters started calling McCain, Giuliani, Thompson, Romney, and Paul bitches. The shrill, screaming bitches of the right beholden to their corporate masters.

16. So it's OK to call men bitches
or it's OK for Dems to call Republicans bitches, or what?

I don't get your point.

18. I don't know that I can make it more clear: Men who think it is no big deal to call a woman a bitch
may get upset when men are called the same word. The reaction gives a clue about whether they look down on women as a group, but respect men.

I wonder how McCain and his supporters would react to one of his backers referring to Thompson, Giuliani, or even a democrat like Biden, as a bitch ?

15. I agree with you
By not correcting the questioner he condoned the question. Anyone with any class would have taken issue with name calling.
