8. NO tsunami watch or warning is in effect for these areas:
To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (Experimental Web Product)
Subject: Tsunami Advisory #1 issued 11/14/2007 at 7:56AM PST

This Tsunami Advisory is for residents along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coast. NO tsunami watch or warning is in effect for these areas.

A Tsunami Advisory is issued by the WCATWC whenever the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii has issued a warning for other regions in the Pacific Basin, and NO tsunami watch or warning is in effect for the states and provinces listed above. It is unlikely that these regions will upgraded to a tsunami warning or watch. Please refer to the PTWC message for further information about the warning.

Based on the earthquake location, magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. Some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea level changes. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

At 7:41 AM Pacific Standard Time on November 14, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.7 occurred in northern Chile. (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

Messages will continue to be issued hourly by the WCATWC until the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issues a cancellation or final message. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate forecasted times only, not that a wave dangerous to the U.S. west coast, British Columbia, or Alaska was generated.)

9. I didn't say "watch" or "warning" just "advisory"--I live on the West Coast
and we get "advisories" frequently.

I wasn't being alarmist.

the Atacama desert, a place that is sparsely populated, has hardly any infrastucture other than a couple of roads and no forests or wildlife except along the river that runs through the province. I was born in Antofagasta and lived a few miles from Calama when I was growing up.

On edit, it seems very close to Tocopilla a port town that could sustain considerable damage.

11. Strong quake hits northern Chile
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 06:20 AM by edwardlindy
Source: BBC News

A powerful 7.7-magnitude quake has hit north Chile, cracking roads, bringing down buildings and knocking out power.
The quake hit at 1243 local time (1543 GMT), centring on Quillahua village, about 100km north-west of Calama town.

At least two people were killed and more than 100 injured in the city of Tocopilla, the authorities said.

The quake - lasting about 50 seconds - sent panicked residents out into the streets. It could even be felt in the capital Santiago, 1,260km to the south.

12. Thanks for the link concerning the one even worse. 9.2? My God.
How much can go wrong at one time? So much terror, pain, suffering. Very long lasting effects. Had never heard that in addition to flooding, sunamis, etc., they also can kick off volcanoes.

Chile doesn't need any more earthquakes, EVER again.

13. Unfortunatley
Chile sits over a subduction zone. Big Quakes and volcanos will be a fact of life there for a few more million years.
