Top ranking members of the House Committee on the Judiciary called recently publicized details of sexual misconduct allegations against U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent "shocking" and of "grave concern," and urged the woman behind the principal complaint to take her case to the supreme judicial disciplinary authority — the Judicial Conference of the United States.

"However, if these allegations are proven, there is no doubt that the Committee will take action," said the statement issued jointly by Committee Chairman John Conyers D-Michigan, Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, the ranking minority member of the committee and courts subcommittee chairman Howard Berman, D-California.
The House judiciary committee has the power to recommend impeachment — the only way a federal judge can be removed from office. The Judicial Conference of the United States also can recommend impeachment and the power to review the 5th Circuit judicial council's earlier decision to reprimand Kent, who is on a paid leave-of-absence.
