VIERA, Fla. -- A jury on Friday convicted state Rep. Bob Allen of soliciting prostitution from an undercover male officer in July.

"I am innocent and I've done nothing wrong," Allen said following the reading of the verdict. "My family, my God and my good constituents know that and we are not going to stop until we get that justice."

Allen faces up to 60 days in county jail and a $500 fine for the second-degree misdemeanor. The Merritt Island Republican was accused of peering over a stall in a men's public park restroom, then agreeing to pay $20 to perform oral sex on Titusville police Officer Danny Kavanaugh.

I got some rather comical emails from people on youtube about how he's innocent and not gay, blah blah blah... point is - he's guilty! A Republican state representative who pushed against gay rights - found guilty for offering a same-sex officer $20 so Allen could give him oral sex... you cannot make this stuff up.

Seconds after he was convicted Friday of soliciting a sex act in a park bathroom, legislative leaders were discussing how to remove him from office.

"This conviction makes it impossible for Rep. Allen to represent responsibly the citizens of his district," Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio said in a statement. "Furthermore, it is my personal belief that it harms the reputation of the Florida House of Representatives. We will now take the appropriate steps."

...Even after his arrest, Allen said he planned to run for a seat in the state Senate in 2010.

But Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer said late Friday that Allen should "seriously consider his ability to effectively serve the citizens of his district, which should be one of his utmost priorities."...

I am somewhat disturbed that they can convict a guy on only the word of the arresting officer. Of course, a misdemeanor is something like a traffic ticket and there probably was other supporting evidence they didn't mention in the story.
