Pakistan's Bhutto, 5,000 supporters detained
Government blocks mass protest against Musharraf citing terror threats

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistani police placed opposition leader Benazir Bhutto under house arrest Friday, uncoiling barbed wire in front of her Islamabad home and reportedly rounding up 5,000 of her supporters to block a mass protest against emergency rule.

Bhutto tried twice to leave by car but was blocked by police after a scuffle with her supporters who tried to remove a barricade. The former prime minister had planned to address a rally in nearby Rawalpindi, defying a ban on public gatherings.

In Rawalpindi, about 200 Bhutto supporters were dispersed by police using tear and batons. Dozens were arrested, an AP Television News cameraman reported. Later, there was a second, smaller clash between protesters and police. Aside from those incidents, the streets of the garrison city were mostly deserted.

1. Just great
Now our great torturer over here will come out and fully support what is happening over there in the name of democracy.
You can now be detained over here for no reason and apparantly be legally tortured to get the "truth" out of you.
I am so ashamed for America:cry:

2. on a side note,Bhutto was elected TWICE to lead the Pakistani nation
then she was ousted.
?
Is she really the answer, the only choice out there for Pakistan ?
dunno,
but with barb wire around her house perimeter,
only way she can be assassinated is with govt consent so this "fort Apache" set up right now is a double sword for Musharraf imo.
He is responsible for keeping her alive. I'm sure she has access to the outside world if they allow sattelite linkup/cell phonne modem communication ect.
ie,
house arrest doesn't mean she is behind bars.
on another side note,
Anybody remember how Gorbachav got word out to the world from his resort house about the coup against him ?
Thats right, and today, the world is far more advanced.
