Manhunt under way; all 283 schools in Broward County locked down

<snip>

"A Broward County Sheriff's deputy died after being shot and left on the roadside Wednesday by a robbery defendant he was transporting to court for trial, officials said.

The officer, Paul Rein, died at a hospital, Sheriff Al Lamberti said.

The suspect, Michael Mazza, then escaped in the department van with the deputy's weapon, officials said.

All 283 schools in the Broward County School District have been placed on lockdown as a precaution in the wake of the shooting, said Andrew Feirstein of Broward County Schools."

1. All schools on "lockdown"?
Why is this becoming S.O.P. whenever someone commits a crime? What do the schools have to do with this? Is the criminal going to hide out in a place where he will stick out like a sore thumb? Is he going to take hostages? Why scare the children like that?

2. They just locked down several schools in
New Hanover County in NC due to a shooting near the school.
This just on our local news.

3. That is all that is on MSNBC. Why is this national news?
I'm sorry that a police officer was badly hurt, I really hate it that an asshole murder has escaped and hope they catch him quickly. But why is this "breaking news" and worthy of lame ass interviews every 10 minutes with people who don't know a darn thing more than they did in the last 10 interviews? This is of concern to the city involved but why does the nation need minute by minute updates? I am constantly amazed at what MSNBC and CNN deem newsworthy and spoon feed people who have no dog in the fight?

I'm guessing as long as they focus on the inconsequential (and NO, I'm not saying the shooting of a police officer is inconsequential) they don't have to bother with the more serious issues of a corrupt administration, the trashing of the Constitution, etc.

I'm hoping that MSNBC does continue to lean left (according to reports) but if MSNBC doesn't get rid of the "cutesy pie" newsreaders during the day reporting nothing to fill air time they will never be taken seriously.

6. So I can't go pick up my son, even if I have a legitimate reason to do so, and
even if I had made prior arrangements. My son is in a public school in Broward - 20 miles or so from where the shooting occurred and maybe 10-12 miles from where they found the van.

"All BCPS have been placed on lockdown status as a precaution at the request of the Broward County Sheriff's Office due to an earlier police shooting incident in Coconut Creek. Lockdown status means that all outer gates and outdoors at all schools are locked, and no one is permitted to enter or leave the schools. Parents are asked not to come to the schools to pickup their children while the lockdown status is in effect. A notice will be posted here when the lockdown status has been lifted."

I'm not comfortable with this, but not for any specific reason that I can explain. I understand the whole "protect your children during the school day while they're in our care" shit. They came out with this crap after 9/11, and something about it just doesn't sit right with me. Here's a link to the "Alert Lever Procedures" - we're apparently at a code red.

16. Indoctrination
Don't want to miss an opportunity to show that the fascists are in charge. If students experience a couple lockdowns a week from K through 12, then they will be a much more compliant populace.

18. They lock down our school every time the police helicopter is overhead
And since we are only a mile or so from the police station, the helicopter flies over our building a LOT. :grr:

5. Something is fishy about this man's escape.
He was handcuffed in a wheelchair in the back of a vann and a divider between him and the 71 year old deputy. How in the world did he get to the deputy?
He was already doing two life sentences,so he was a security risk to transport, yet the deputy was alone!

9. Curious indeed
And the deputy was 71? No ageism at work here, but that seems a bit old for a deputy. They might be required to run and tackle a suspect; that may be a lot to expect of someone of that age.

In any case, I am sorry to hear of his death. What a horrible thing for this creep to do.

FYI - Just heard on breaking news the suspect has been apprehended. Hope the cops get some quality time with him in private. Also, just heard that the deputy was 76! Can that be right?

12. MSNBC says they got thim
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - A sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot Wednesday as he transported a convicted robber from jail to court. The inmate was later caught and authorities were investigating whether the attack was an ambush.

Officers took 40-year-old Michael Mazza into custody, Hollywood police spokesman Tony Rode said, according to NBC affiliate WTVJ.

<snip>

The Broward County deputy, 76-year-old Paul Rein, died at a hospital a short time later, Sheriff Al Lamberti said.

Mazza was alone in the van with the deputy as he was being taken to court in restraints for trial on charges of bank robbery and eluding police. Lamberti said Mazza, who was in handcuffs, may have had accomplices who ambushed Rein as they drove to the courthouse.

Now, why does the sheriff have a 76-year-old deputy on duty!?!?! Isn't there a retirement age or something?

14. deputy age not surprising
You'd probably be surprised to know how many departments employee retired LEO's (law enforcement officers) to do "housekeeping" work like this, everything from prisoner transport to driving out of service emergency vehicles between the station and the repair shop, to guarding court houses, etc. In a lot of cases, the retirees have the training, many work for very little pay, a lot even voluteer, and all of them can usually pass any background check that may be necessary for the work. Sometimes the labor groups negotiate to ensure that only retirees can get some of these positions.

15. Driving on the turnpike today
I must have seen at least 50 cop cars whizzing up and down the highway. So it was just a matter of time before they caught the guy.

17. It's really sad a man would take someones life over that.
You committed a crime & you got caught. Why kill over a prison term? Now he will get the needle.
