Six in 10 consumers see recession: survey
Source: Reuters

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Six in 10 consumers say a recession is likely in the next three to six months, according to a survey on holiday spending released on Wednesday.

In a telephone survey by America's Research Group, 45.7 percent of 1,000 respondents said a recession was "somewhat likely," and 14.3 percent said it was "very likely." Forty percent said a recession was "not likely."

The interviews were conducted November 1-4. The error factor is plus or minus 4.3 percent.

Recession fears ahead of the holiday shopping season have been kindled by concerns about jobs and the U.S. housing meltdown.

1. Oh, there won't be recession...
...with the incipient rise in the cost of oil (and hence everything that relies on oil), we're going to get stagflation instead! :scared:

2. Recession or stagflation...
the question is, will they hit next year, or will they wait until a new President has taken office? And will that new President be blamed? Call me suspicious, but it seems like a certain somebody's oil buddies are doing everything they can to make a really rocky road for the next Democratic president.

4. I live in a pretty affluent suburb

(My husband has a good job, but we feel like the poor folks around here.)

Anyway, I've noticed two - once popular - store closings that shocked me, and the mall seems pretty darn empty for this time of year, and I get a really bad feeling everytime I have to go into a retail store. I've never seem such huge storewide sales. Merchants are drastically lowering prices to move merchandise. A very popular store has about two thirds of its merchandise one half off.
