MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) -

A suicide bomber killed 90 people and wounded 50 on Tuesday in an attack on a delegation of visiting
parliamentarians in the northern Afghan town of Baghlan, the director of the local hospital said.

"The bodies of 90 people have been brought to the hospital so far and 50 people have been wounded,"
Baghlan hospital director Dr. Khalilullah told Reuters.

Five parliamentarians, including opposition spokesman Mostafa Kazemi, were among those killed, the
provincial governor said. Baghlan's intelligence chief, Abdurrahman Sayedkhail, said the number of
casualties was so high it was impossible to give an accurate number for now.

14. Yes I'm sure the "Mayor of Kabul" is on top of this right away
As a former agent for Exxon he periodically needs some diversion, other that counting his filthy lucre from his oil holdings

100 killed, injured in Afghan suicide bombing
06/11/2007 13h58

KABUL (AFP) - Around 100 people were killed or wounded in a suicide blast in a sugar factory in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, a health official said after the government confirmed six MPs were among the dead.

In the immediate aftermath of the late afternoon blast in the town of Pul-i-Khumri about 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of Kabul, officials could not provide AFP with a breakdown of dead and wounded.

"According to initial reports from our local health and hospital officials, there are 100 people killed and injured," said Ahmad Shah Shokohmand, director of provincial health departments in the public health ministry in Kabul.

"In one hospital we have got 42 people admitted and in another hospital nine bodies have been brought," he said.

The interior ministry said earlier 50 were dead and wounded. The president's office said six national lawmakers on an official visit to the factory were among the dead.

"We have recorded 50 people dead so far, but there are still bodies on the streets we have not
counted and some of the dead have already been taken away by their relatives," Baghlan provincial
security chief Abdurrahman Sayedkhail told Reuters.

The director of the hospital in Baghlan initially said 90 people had been killed in the attack,
but later put the toll at between 60 and 90.

4. The Taliban seems to be on the move.
They've been taking over towns in the west.

This bomb was in the north.

Their traditional areas of strength are the south and the east.

Not a good sign.

7. And it's a wonder why the media hasn't been critical of Bush
and the resurgence of the Taliban. It has happened on his watch. Right?

12. Baghlan is on the border with a strip of Pashtun territory N of
Kabul. There have been attacks in the past in and near Baghlan.

Pul-i-Khumri is firmly in Pashtun territory. (It really helps to have an ethnic map: You see that nearly every attack is in or adjacent to Pashtun territory.)

Their traditional areas of strength are south and east because that's where they have pretty much uninterrupted ethnic sway. But the Pashtun either expanded (in some cases) or been vestigial (in others) in a few areas in the West (the three districts) or in the North, and the Taliban manage to claim some support or at least acquiescence in those areas as well.

Bomb targeting Afghan lawmakers kills 20 By AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan - A bomb blast targeted a group of lawmakers touring a factory north of Kabul on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people, including six parliamentarians, a lawmaker said.

The lawmakers were about to tour a sugar factory in the northern province of Baghlan when the blast went off. Six members of parliament were among at least 20 people killed, said Faizullah Zaki, a lawmaker from Jawzjan province.

Kamin Khan, a police official, said people "everywhere" were dead and wounded, including police, children, lawmakers and officials from the Department of Agriculture. Afghanistan's major television station, Tolo TV, reported more than 100 people killed and wounded.

13. this is a direct result of * ordering troops into Iraq.
If the troops were in Afghanistan instead, they wouldn't have to resort to bombing. More incompetence/callous disregard for human life brought to you courtesy of Bushco.

16. naive
Even here - in this progressive forum - we buy his arguement that "we" must invade Afghanistan because they are "harboring" Osama. "We" are soooo naive (which means the rest of the world suffers under "our" power).

Sad.
