LEXINGTON, Neb. — A teacher accused of running away with a 13-year-old student planned a romantic life with him in his native Mexico, but she was near broke when they were captured there, authorities said Saturday.

Their border crossing during a week on the lam may mean the teen, an illegal immigrant, will not be able to come back to the rural Nebraska town where he was an eighth-grader.

The boy's relatives told police he had called home asking for money, leading investigators to a shopping mall in the border city of Mexicali on Friday. Kelsey Peterson, 25, and Fernando Rodriguez, 13, were taken into custody without incident in the parking lot.

Peterson, a sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, fled with the boy after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship, authorities said. Court documents said the boy was last seen Oct. 26.

A young girl could want to have sex with an older man, but, biologically and hormonally our bodies develop at different rates. Biologically, the male sex drive peaks at around 13, in women it peaks at 30. I knew several girls who were sexually active at that age, although not that many, and few were what I'd call emotionally well-adjusted, though there were drugs around I can't say it's a representative group. I'm not saying every thirteen year old girl who has sex is being violated, but it's a lot more likely. And as for being forced or tricked, that teacher was in her twenties and fairly cute, if this kid is anything like I was at that age, there wouldn't be a need for persuading. I wouldn't presume to say how this kid SHOULD feel, only that were I offered the same proposition at that age I would have jumped at the opportunity. Theres' nothing sexist about it.
