Draft Gore Launches TV Ads on CNN and in New Hampshire
Source: draftgore.com

Nov. 1/OAKLAND, CA – The movement to draft Gore for President continues to gain momentum as Draft Gore is about to launch its first round of television advertising on Friday.

Funded entirely by contributions from grassroots supporters, the 30-second spot features clips from speeches in which Gore takes an early stand against the war in Iraq and exhorts Americans to take back their government and restore Constitutional authority. “I believe our success in defending ourselves depends precisely on not giving up what we stand for,” Gore says in one of the clips.

The ad will run for five days on CNN news shows beginning Nov. 2 and for three days on New Hampshire’s WMUR station. “Imagine a renewed world,” the ad urges Americans. “Imagine an end to the war in Iraq. Imagine Al Gore as President.” The ad concludes with an appeal to supporters to sign the petition at Draftgore.com.

Draft Gore’s TV commercial follows on the heels of a full-page ad the group ran in the New York Times earlier this month. The ad, devised in the form of an open letter to Gore, received national and international attention just two days before the former vice president was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

“Al Gore still has time to jump into this race,” said Draft Gore chair Monica Friedlander. “He maintains a massive base of support, as evidenced by recent polls and the unprecedented strength of this truly grassroots movement that’s sweeping the country unlike anything we have seen in recent political history.”

A CBS News poll released last week shows the undeclared Gore running a strong second at 32 percent among Democratic voters nationwide, only five points behind presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton. Moreover, Gore polls much better than Clinton against Republican frontrunner Rudy Giuliani, 52 percent to 46 percent, compared to Clinton’s 49 to 47 percent, according to a poll released by CNN on Oct. 21.

Draft Gore’s online petition has garnered nearly a quarter-million signatures over the past year, despite having received little publicity until recent weeks. The petition more than doubled in size since July. Draft Gore also ran a series of radio ads in targeted areas between June and October.

1. He'd better hurry, time is running out...
Some filing deadlines are today and tomorrow, unless this is going to be a massive nationwide write-in campaign. I would rather Al decide to run of his own free will than being drafted by a convention.

18. i think that is part of the plan
refuse to participate directly in the hurry up states, run a write in campaign. look to write in deadlines in early states.
and does anyone, anyone think that al gore would stand by and let people spend this kind of money is he were not running? really?

22. If it were all part of the plan, it would be ingenious.
Gore would still maintain his huge popularity and credibility on global warming, if he started an election effort based on early write-in campaigns.

He could say "It wasn't me, the people summoned me to serve them" and not even come away looking like a politician.

Maybe there's more to this than I thought...

I'm going to work for Draft Gore immediately.

53. Believe me. I want Gore to run, but I think all this "draft Al Gore" pleading will backfire.
Just think about it, he’s going to run. Period. ...I mean even on our homepage here there’s a link to donate to his campaign. He could get in a lot of trouble for collecting money for a none existent campaign.

Just imagine all the bad publicity that will come from Gore jumping into the race only after being drafted. “They’ll” call it a political stunt. I could see all the floating-heads on FOX putting on whining voices and belittling the whole charade.

I’m hoping that when Gore decides to announce, he’ll give an honest and reasonable explanation for telling us for months that he wasn’t going to run and then “flip-flopping”. ...I’m hoping he’ll explain how corrupt and manipulative politics have become (more so than usual).

He should explain that he’s not willing to take money from Big Business, so he “waited” in order to escape all the mud slinging and the need to “defend” himself for a few months. ...He should say that he’s running for the American people and he’s now willing to answer any or every debate question that has already been asked.

...I’m hoping he puts an end to this “draft” and just run.

Do you want to pick your president or do you want to let the media do it for you? Isn't it about time to see just how powerful the people can be? Or should we just go back and settle for the same shit with a different name?

Your bogeyman "They'll" can kiss my ass.

6. He doesn't HAVE to do anything
He said he isn't running. I think if someone were to hand it to him on a silver platter, then he'd take it, therefore a Shermanesque statement isn't going to work. It boggles the mind that a statement made by a Civil War general in 1884 has become the basis by which we compare all potential candidate's denials of intent to run.

21. Per USA Today....
"His spokeswoman, Kalee Kreider, told us by telephone from Nashville this evening that while she hadn't yet spoken to Gore about the TV ad, "we don't have a change in posture. He does not have any intention to run for office in 2008."

So this is then tantamount to harassment. How much money was wasted on this ad like the 65000 dollars on the NY Times ad while his organizations look for people to support them to do truly good work? I hope he sticks to his guns. I think this ad is not being done out of support for him, but out of anger that he hasn't given them what they want... so they are now pushing him harder. Very disrespectful as far as I am concerned. And look, it is playing on the very stations in the MSM that actually trash his work. What hypocrites.

23. Oh, please.
"So this is then tantamount to harassment."

No. Harassment is not creating an ad in a small state and taking out a full page in a single US newspaper.

"How much money was wasted on this ad like the 65000 dollars on the NY Times ad while his organizations look for people to support them to do truly good work?"

If he's really not going to run at all, why not let them waste their money? It's theirs to waste.

"I hope he sticks to his guns."

At least now you've finally admitted what we've all known already.

"I think this ad is not being done out of support for him, but out of anger that he hasn't given them what they want... so they are now pushing him harder."

How do you know? Are you their shrink? Where did you get this sudden clairvoyance?

"Very disrespectful as far as I am concerned."

Well frankly, I'm offended you find it disrespectful. So there.

"And look, it is playing on the very stations in the MSM that actually trash his work. What hypocrites."

CNN is still a station the Democrats as a party respect. The candidates have debated on CNN and Gore has made appearances on there recently. How else do you expect people to get their message out?

states hold the key now. So where I rest my hopes now is that he would continue "not to act" on the issue of candidacy. He would allow himself to remain.

From there I'd hope that the politics of early primaries has not crippled things beyond repair.

What the hell are you going on about? It is his place and his alone to deny what is being offered, to stop what is being done to get him to run. Not mine, not yours, not anyones else. We can make a choice individually to support him this way or not, but he's the only one who can make that choice for all of us.

Now then, please *actually* answer this question: "Why is he allowing this to continue?"

45. Relax dude.
It'll be over soon when the primary filing deadlines pass.

As for the harrassment charge, Gore could shut these people up by issuing a Sherman statement like he did in 2004. Why he doesn't do that now, i dunno. It does seem to me that he has transcended politics, and the idea of him jumping into the race would seem so... pedestrian.

I personally think *any* attention Gore gets is good attention, because the more he's brought into people's consciousness, the more awareness is being brought to the climate crisis.

fwiw.

24. An Open Letter to Al Gore
Here is a letter I actually sent to Al Gore back on May 30, 2006. (For anyone concerned about privacy, the address and fax are to Mr. Gore's business office and are a matter of public record). Krash

The Office of the Honorable Al Gore
2100 West End Avenue
Nashville, TN 37203

Via Fax: (615) 327-1323, only

Dear President Gore:

In light of your critically acclaimed movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” I wanted to share an experience I had this weekend.

My wife and I took our two daughters (aged 10 and 6) on a road trip to Mt. Rushmore over the Memorial Day weekend. The trip was 6.5 hours, each way, so we had a lot of time to talk about a lot of things.

At one point, as we were passing a 1.25 mile long train, with full coal car, after coal car, after coal car, my wife, and I were trying to explain the concept of "global warming" to the girls in language that kids could understand - you know, people burn fossil fuels, like coal, and oil, to make our lives easier, because it helps heat our houses, and run our cars, etc., but, that it also has a down side, because the pollution is getting trapped in the atmosphere, which is making our planet warmer, causing the polar ice caps to melt, and causing really strong hurricanes, like Hurricane Katrina.

At one point in the conversation, our very, very wise six year old asked, “Daddy, the earth is alive, isn’t it?” To which I answered, “Yes, honey, in many ways, I think the earth is like one large living thing.” She thought for a minute, and said, “I think I know what’s wrong, Daddy . . . all of the pollution is making the earth sick, and it has a fever.”

Without missing a beat, our extremely intelligent 10 year chimed in “Ooooh, that’s bad. If global warming is like the world having a fever, that means that WE are the virus!”

”Out of the mouths of babes . . .” The truth is so simple that even kids can understand it.

Thank you for spreading the word, with your movie. I hope that it is a financial success, but, more importantly, I hope that it is a catalyst that will bring about REAL change before it is too late.

Finally, I sincerely hope that you will run for RE-Election in 2008. America needs you, now, more than ever!

Sincerely,

Original signature

P.S. “Gore/Obama 2008!” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

30. RFK question
at what stage of the primaries did RFK enter the race? Were NH and Iowa early states during that time? Did he skip them? How well was he doing in the polls before he was cruelly taken from us?

I was a kid living in another country when all this unfolded. If someone could help me understand how RFK planned his strategy, it would help us better understand what Gore needs to do to get this nomination.

Does anyone have a list of the early states and dates?

I'm proud and honored to be one of the people who contributed to make those commercials possible. Very very proud. :)

...and I'll hold out mailing my absentee ballot until the very last second, but my gut feeling is that he has decided to make the environment his legacy and won't run for president now or in the future. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't think he will run.

56. I thought the plan
Was for Al Gore to be Stephen Colbert's running mate. Then, when Colbert gets elected, he can quit on the first day and voila - Al Gore is President.

58. "Clinton’s 49 to 47 percent"
That just scares the piss out of me. I'm terrified that Hilary will win the nomination (she certainly doesn't get my vote!), putting the contest close enough that the GOP can steal the election even if they can't win it outright.
