Clinton hits back after testy debate

by Stephen Collinson Wed Oct 31, 6:06 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Hillary Clinton's camp Wednesday accused her Democratic 2008 rivals of "piling-on" their attacks after a testy debate provoked the Democratic front-runner's first wobbles of the campaign.

Barack Obama and John Edwards finally drew blood in a fusillade of attacks on the former first lady, setting the stage for an increasingly hostile eight-week sprint to the first nominating contest in Iowa.

.........

In a snappy web video, and a memo, Clinton's campaign hit back, arguing that by standing her ground in the showdown in Philadelphia, she had proven herself of presidential caliber.

The video, titled "The Politics of Pile On," spliced clips of Clinton's rivals repeatedly saying her name before cutting to her quote: "I seem to be the topic of great conversation and great consternation -- and that's for a reason."

1. "I seem to be the topic of great conversation and great consternation
-- and that's for a reason."

That's for many reasons, Senator.

6. If you talk in any manner that makes her look bad then you are no longer in the "politics of hope"
her "camp" is such crap. how is that any different when she talks about the republicans?

3. lets be clear here... Clinton didn't hit back, Hillary Clinton's camp did
again showing how weak she is. If her name was Hillary Smith, she would have poll numbers right there with Chris Dodd.

7. Well she was fooled by Bush (twice) and also by her husband...
I guess being smart doesn't mean much in her case.

11. Exactly - Bill wouldn't have been President
without her behind him. Not that he's not brilliant and in possession of a large amount of charm but she's a big part of how he got there.

9. "when they attack, they came off as desperate" and
"Should the race continue down its current trajectory, the poll finds Clinton defeating Giuliani by eight percentage points."(Pew)
"In a hypothetical match-up between Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, bloc after bloc of traditionally Republican voters break for Clinton: She wins the South. She polls evenly with voters who attend church at least once a week. She splits families with a household income above $100,000. She loses rural voters and men — but only by a narrow margin. All are constituencies Republicans have dominated for decades; George W. Bush won each by double-digit margins."(Pew)

Pew questioned an unusually large number of voters to try to paint the most accurate picture possible of where the presidential contest stands today.

I thank you
Ben David

10. Rudy's not a real conservative.
Check out Pat Buchanan's article on him in the latest American Conservative magazine. A real conservative (and not a neocon) would do much better with those groups.

12. What a response...
Simply because she messed up answering ONE QUESTION!

Personally, I think this is all orchestrated by the DNC to show that Hillary can 'take a punch'.

Too bad it backfired. I may get flamed for this, but there is no damn way she gets my vote.

If this is the kind of response she gives for a minor flub, I can only imagine how she would react to a real problem.

No thanks, Hill... I'll stick with John. Not only does he 'get it', he also gives a damn. He never had to go into politics to be successful, he became successful by sticking up for those who couldn't fight for themselves.

Should Hill get nominated by the Dems, I'll hope that John runs as an independent.

13. Exactly
Maybe I'm reading into things, but it looks like a variation of "It's not nice for all those mean boys to beat up on a girl." Maybe it's because I heard that refrain too many times when Sen. Clinton and I were of elementary school age.

14. I ain't stuck on no one. I will give my unsolicited opinion though.
The last debate (in name only)

1. The funniest candidate was Kucinich. Warms the cockles of heart.

2. The dumbest that passed the most gas was Hillary. Smelled the worse.

3. The phoniest and easies to read was Bill Richardson.

4. The best one-liners was Joe Biden.

5. Mike Gravel wins hands down for being invisible.

6. Edwards & Obama made the most sense with the most words.

7. Cris Dobb didn't ask where the Bees took a hike to.

15. What a whiney twit! A male candidate would NEVER get away with this whining. She should take it on
the chin like everyone else.Apparently criticism is unacceptable to her.

17. I agree:
"...by standing her ground in the showdown in Philadelphia, she had proven herself of presidential caliber."

Kinda like Bush "standing his ground" over the Iraq debacle.
