Protester Desiree Farooz confronts Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a photograph taken today by Charles Dharapak of the Associated Press.

Rice was preparing to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee when she encountered Farooz inside the hearing room. Farooz had painted her hands red, apparently to symbolize her group's claim that members of President Bush's cabinet have blood on their hands because of the way they've waged war in Iraq.

Churchill was a back bencher in the 30s because he was one of the worst admirals in British history. His stupidity, stubbornness and general incompetence costed hundreds of thousands of allied casualties at Gallipoli. I'd like to share something with you all that I read last night. It's from the comic/graphic novel collection called The Bush Junta, which was released prior to the 2004 election. If you don't have it, it's one of those Big Book of Weirdos-fashioned historic comic novels, with art by the late Hack Smith, Mack White, Ted Rall, Ethan Persoff, etc, about Bewsh and his administration.

The one that's the most biting and haunting is the Ted Jouflas piece titled "With Sweetness", the more-than-ironic musical-term origin of Condosleeza's name. It's the long paragraph at the end of the story, which features an illustration of her depicted with vampire fangs, tears of blood and holding a torn-chested, armless Iraqi boy, oil wells going full tilt in the background:

As if the death and maiming of innocent civilians, many of them children, were merely an afternoon pastime on a Playstation or Gameboy. Don't listen to what they say. Watch what they do. All of them have conflicts of interest due to their ties to Big Oil. They did nothing with the intelligence they had before September 11th. They lied to the world about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. Because of these lies thousands are dead or maimed, many of them children. Thousands more will be. They have awarded all of the reconstruction contracts to their former employers, Halliburton, Bechtel and the Carlyle Group. Draft dodgers themselves, they misuse our military to further enrich their own class at our expense and peril. All of this horror from the same party that moralized, ranted, raved and impeached a President for having a girlfriend. They see themselves as "The Untouchable Class". No matter what they say about God, God does not want us to act like this. This year, we have a chance to reach out and touch "The Untouchable Class". Since taking office, this administration's tax policy has destroyed three million jobs.

This November, let's make it 3 million and ONE.

We are losing this country. I am at the Code Pink house in DC, where Lori has been released and the others are being held overnight. Des is going to be charged with assaulting a federal officer, a VERY SERIOUS offense. Liz was taken to the hospital--she is hurt.

I have four Canadian students staying at my house because their car is still being held and all of their papers and possessions are in the car--they cannot leave and the police are being quite horrible about it. The police made a mistake, mis-identified the vehicle, and seized it.

These kids are getting an eye and earful about what passes for freedom and democracy in the US.

We hear stories every week about criminal activities of our leaders. It is OVERWHELMING.
