Teacher who attacked base had death wish, FBI says
Source: miamiherald

Wielding two butcher knives bought at Wal-Mart and vodka bottles to use as explosives, Tahmeed Ahmad chanted ''Death to America'' and told Homestead Air Reserve Base guards he wanted to kill soldiers.

But Ahmad was no terrorist, authorities believe.

Rather, the Miami Central High School math teacher wanted to ''commit suicide by cop'' when he attacked military policemen stationed at the west gate just before midnight Sunday, the FBI said.

Ahmad did not get his wish. One officer fired his handgun at Ahmad. He missed.

''We take security very seriously at the base, but this was quite an unusual event,'' said Lt. Col. Tom Davis, a base spokesman. ``Our security forces are well trained and responded appropriately.''

1. That damned Wal-Mart again!
Middle-eastern-sounding name.

Incendiary devices.

"Death to America" chants.

But he's no terrorist...well, not a very competent one, at any rate.

2. Born in Kuwait, naturalized US citizen.
Apparently the fellow has mental illness issues. Article says he'd tried to kill himself once before.

I think he was using the things he thought would most likely get him killed.

16. At least WallyWorld can breath a sigh of relief over this one.
If the Darwin candidate had been killed, Wal-Mart would have undoubtedly been sued by the grieving next of kin for contributing to his demise. :eyes:

4. Surprised the guards showed restraint and didn't kill him on the spot!
Especially in FL!

Hope the guy gets some mental health help.

9. I'm trying very hard not to call you something nasty.
Bad cops (whatever their stripe) are still the exception, not the rule in the Western World. If nothing else (tongue very much in cheek) they're too ruddy lazy to want to deal with all that 'effing paperwork.

Hell, that even explains a certain amount of the patently stupid arse covering. Screwing up by the numbers (ie. do everything right and still end up with an unacceptable/unpalatable outcome) means even more paperwork. Far easier to find a way to dump it on the victim. Don't agree, but can understand to a certain degree.

The problem is not the cops. It's the people who employ them, and ultimately you, I and everyone else are those employers.

The situation in the US is not just the fault of PNAC, Haliburton, Carlyle, Enron and so on. It's the fault of generations of US voters who chose to vote on the basis of talking points, and who flat out refuse to actually apply themselves to learning what the hell is going on. You my friend included.

14. And Hillfolk have a reputatiuon of paedophilic incest.
Perhaps we should tar all Hillfolk with that brush. Not from mountain stock are you by any chance?

And how about actually reading the post you are replying to. It was a guard base. So you've just essentially tarred the entire state with your brush.

The problem, first and foremost is policY. Not the policE. Their job however is to enforce policy whatever it may be.

Of course some sadistic bastards have found the policy in Florida (and elsewhere) to be a perfect excuse to exercise their sickness. But they are not ALL cops. They are not even MOST cops. They are a twisted minority who are quite possibly protected by higher-ups. Nor can the good cops do much except keep their heads down and try to do their job and protect the populace. And if they really are decent, they can't even leave without abandoning the people and their oath to serve and protect.

Good cops are forced to do unpopular things even in the best of jurisdictions. How about giving the ones stuck in Florida a break and saving your spleen for the actual few who deserve it?

I guess reality set in when the shot was fired.

There are installations were if you run the gate your car will be fired on. Lucky dude.

Probably needs a joint and a month of sex on demand and everything will be ok..
