Castro claims Bush could spark WWIII

HAVANA - Fidel Castro wrote Tuesday that President Bush is threatening the world with nuclear war and famine — an attack on Washington a day before the White House was to announce new plans to draw Cuba away from communism.

"The danger of a massive world famine is aggravated by Mr. Bush's recent initiative to transform foods into fuel," Castro wrote in Cuban news media, referring to U.S. support for using corn and other food crops to produce gasoline substitutes.

The brief essay titled "Bush, Hunger and Death" also alleged that Bush "threatens humanity with World War III, this time using atomic weapons."

The White House on Tuesday brushed off Castro's comments — particularly his assertion that Bush was pursuing a forceful conquest of Cuba.

9. He's been saying this since 2001.
It took Americans this long to realize that he (Castro) has been right about Bush for years.

8. Depends on how you look at it...
They have a more equitable economic system, they have much more accessible healthcare, and they do not seek to threaten neighboring states, or any other states whatsoever. Believe it or not the only way I see bush having any lead on this guy is, ironically, political freedom. Even with illegal wiretapping, and all these new fascist "security measures", we still have more freedom of political expression here in the US, however, if Bush had another 8 years, I think this gulf would shrink dramatically.

10. Um.. developing world class ed and health care systems IS political expression..
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 08:55 AM by Mika
.. by the Cuban people. Surely one can't think that Castro forces these things upon people who don't want them.

It seems that it is in America that there doesn't exist the political freedom or democracy to express what a vast majority of Americans claim to want - universal health care and world class education (including higher ed) for all of their kids.

5. Here's the full text from Mr Castro

For the first time, just before the UN discusses, as it does every year, the project of the Cuban resolution condemning the blockade, the President of the United States announces that he will adopt new measures to accelerate the "transition period" in our country, equivalent to a new conquest of Cuba by force.

On the other hand, the danger of a massive world famine is aggravated by Mr. Bush??s recent initiative to transform foods into fuel while, calling on strategic security principles, he threatens humanity with World War III, this time using atomic weapons.

Such crucially important issues are the ones attracting the attention of the representatives of the countries that will be meeting on Tuesday, October 30, to discuss the Cuban project condemning the blockade.

In elections where voting is not mandatory, our people have just given their verdict, with more than 95 percent of the electorate casting their vote at 37,749 polling stations, in ballot boxes guarded by school children. That is the example provided by Cuba.
