Cheney: US Will Not Let Iran Go Nuclear
Source: AP

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - The United States and other nations will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

``Our country, and the entire international community, cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its grandest ambitions,'' Cheney said in a speech to the Washington Institute for Near East Studies.

He said Iran's efforts to pursue technology that would allow it to build a nuclear weapon are obvious and that ``the regime continues to practice delay and deceit in an obvious effort to buy time.''

If Iran continues on its current course, Cheney said the U.S. and other nations are prepared to take action. The vice president made no specific reference to military action.

``We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon,'' he said.

Uh, you seem to indicate that there's still a question in your head as to whether or not it's a good idea. It seems like a *really* bad idea to me. Once these things get started you cannot predict where they will go.

around there will be no investigations of his actions - one day we will learn that he is part of the suppliers that sold parts and materials to Iran for their "nuclear needs". If yes, Iran is participating in the duplicty.

Khan with Cheney/friends in the mix? Russia? China? North Korea - yeah maybe.

We need to know where Iran buys to better understand what's going on.

And tonight we have Valerie Plame who can't talk about that.

How did this country get so gory and secretive?

Halloween every minute of the day and night here in the United States of America.

Buildings fall down, floods 'happen', government trailers are parked empty - victims of the flood and poverty are piled up in little apartments or shelters, ice is driven all over the U.S. in a truck in August, bodies are left in the street for two weeeks, nuclear bombs are flown over the middle of the country ... lost, so they say, prisons are going up all over the country, private soldiers working for the State Dept make a fortune by killing Iraqis in the name of protecting a government, leaders in Washington giving Dick and George everything he wants, George becomes more delusionsal from being propped up by his handlers and by paying undeserved deference to him, and everyone runs from the big bad Halloween monster - the one who doesn't have to pretend.

The people here are screwed if the secrecy continues.

Thanks to our creator(s) for what we've learned so far.

Long live the brave.

21. This from a man who has been wrong on everything. Be Paranoid
Cheney is insane...there is no longer any doubt.
We can live with a nuclear Iran the same way we live with a nuclear India and Pakistan, and Israel. and Saudi Arabia. Iran is the only country in the region without a nuke.
Keep in mind that Iran refused to use WMD against Iraq even when Iraq was using them against Iran.
We would have used WMD if Iraq used them on us but Iran did not. They claim it was "inhumane" and would not do it.
Nukes have nothing to do with why Cheney wants to attack Iran. They are after the oil rights and always have been. Iraq was an excuse to get them closer to Iran's oil.
We won't be fooled again. But it may not be enough to stop Cheney/Bush/ and Pelosi...yes Pelosi, who could have prevented the mass murder of thousands of Iranians by impeaching Cheney and Bush and by preventing a war funding bill from coming to the floor for a vote. She refuses to do what is necessary to stop this administration from advancing their war so she is complicit in it and just as guilty.

31. Cheney is right
Gawd, I never thought I'd say that...

:puke:

Ah, better. Okay, let me explain...

In this strictly limited sense, Cheney is right.

Iran has signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. So the world has every right to keep nuclear weapons from being developed by Iran by whatever means necessary.

Having said that...

There is no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. There is evidence that Iran is developing nuclear power, which is entirely different and quite legitimate. In other words, despite inflammatory rhetoric, there is no evidence that the 'course' Iran is on is anything but nuclear power plants.

Furthermore, since Cheney is directly responsible for DESTROYING THE INTELLIGENCE-GATHERING ORGANIZATION THAT WAS MONITORING IRAN'S NUCLEAR PROGRAM TO BEGIN WITH (*cough cough treason cough*) and that he's so frothingly rabid to go to war with Iran to fulfill Pax Americana, I don't think he's really qualified to talk about this. Seeing as how he happily lies us into wars and all that.

In other words, HE SHOULD SHUT THE FUCK UP and resign. Then be hanged for treason. Plenty of tall yardarms and ropes on the USS Constitution, if I may make a humble suggestion.

And now, I'll put on my Nomex boxers.

Edited on Sun Oct-21-07 07:59 PM by Gregorian
We all know that Iraq was not a threat. And we all know where that ended up.

There is only one way, in lieu of impeachment, that will stop this. Our forces are going to have to be told to stand fast. Do not advance. Generals will have to dig in their heels.

I don't know where Wes Clark stands on this kind of thinking. I want to say he would agree, but I doubt it. But the alternative is murder. For both sides. And of our economy.

Of course I am assuming they mean military action. Even "surgical".

Cheney raises anti-Iran rhetoric
By Jim Lobe

WASHINGTON - In the harshest speech against Iran given by a top George W Bush administration official to date, Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday warned the Islamic Republic of "serious consequences" if it did not freeze its nuclear program and accused it of "direct involvement in the killings of Americans".

"Given the nature of Iran's rulers, the declarations of the Iranian president, and the trouble the regime is causing throughout the region - including the direct involvement in the killing of Americans- our country and the entire international community cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its most aggressive ambitions," Cheney warned in a major policy address to the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP).

"The Iranian regime needs to know that if it stays on its present course, the international community is prepared to impose serious consequences," he added. "The United States joins other nations in sending a clear message: we will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

In his nearly 30-minute speech, an uncompromising defense of the Bush administration's record in the Middle East, Cheney also claimed that, with Washington's "surge" strategy working well against al-Qaeda in Iraq, the "greatest strategic threat that Iraq's Shi'ites face today in consolidating their rightful role in Iraq's new democracy is the subversive activities of the Iranian regime". (...)

Seems like ol' man Cheney took time from his schedule of shooting small critters and old men in their faces, came out of his undisclosed bunker, and raised the war rhetoric. This is starting to feel like early 2003, all over again...

46. Note the venue
the hardline Israelis/AIPAC and assorted Lobbies are really putting on the war show aren't they? No wonder Hillary is so hawkish and neocon like these days.....

<snip>

The forum chosen by Cheney to deliver his speech was in many ways as significant as its timing and context. WINEP, a generally hawkish think-tank, was founded some 20 years ago by the research director of the highly influential lobby, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and is funded by many of the same donors.

AIPAC, in turn, has led a high-powered effort to persuade Congress to impose tough new sanctions against Iran and foreign companies that do business with it, and, more recently, to have Tehran's Revolutionary Guard declared a "terrorist" organization.

As Cheney himself noted Sunday, his own national security adviser, John Hannah, once served as WINEP's deputy director. While WINEP does not take specific positions on pending legislation or policies, it is generally regarded as at least sympathetic to AIPAC's efforts and often provides the research AIPAC uses in its lobbying activities.

Cheney's speech was remarkable on several counts, beginning with the fact that it came less than a week after Gates gave a much more restrained presentation on US Middle East policy and the threat posed by Iran to a yet more-hawkish pro-Israel group, the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs.
