Bustamante to set ballot date quickly, let court rule on succession proces
"Facing the biggest decision of his career, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante said Tuesday he will likely take no more than 24 hours from the day the choice is his to set the date for the recall election of Gov. Gray Davis"

"But he said he will leave to an independent commission and the California Supreme Court a decision on whether he becomes governor himself -- without an election to determine a successor -- if Davis is recalled."

Wouldn't it be great if Bustamante became Governor?

1. As long as it isn't Schwartzenegger or some other
non-Democrat.

2. Sounds good to me
It would be about as democratic as that silly recall process in California.

3. I wish Gray Davis would step down already
The repukes are going cheat, I would rather not give them the opportunity to cheat.

4. Supposedly, Davis is obsessed with this
behind the scenes. He wants to retain power. Who wouldn't, really?

5. Not very likely
Davis has spent most of his adult life working toward becoming Governor. And now he is going to give it up without a fight?

13. it's too late for that to help
once the recall petition is filed (which has happened), there has to be an election even if the Governor has resigned. so a resignation could only hurt at this point.

16. I think he has until it is certified signature count
He can not resign after that though. I hope if he does not resign that Bustamonte goes on the ballot. I really have the feeling if this goes to vote, Davis will lose his butt in a big way. Mostly because of voter apathy and lack of knowledge of the recall process.

6. Gray Davis needs to resign BEFORE all this cranks up...
Thus nullifying the entire, nakedly-partisan process. The Repubs couldn't blame him for the Enron-induced brownouts anymore, and Cruz Bustamente could have a fresh start--and wouldn't hold any blame for the enormous deficits Calif. is facing. (Neither he nor Davis should anyway, of course, as they're caused by Dub's policies, but that's another story).

His leaving early would take away a target, and a false movement, away from Repubs, and serve to make them wait until the next election--in 2006--to try and get the governorship, as it's done in just about every other state! x(

B-)

10. Do all of you "Davis should resign" folks....
understand that this ISN'T just about this election? That if Davis were to resign it could effect every other Democratic governor we ever have? To do so would be to tell the GOP that anytime they lose an election they can just whip up a million or so signatures, throw a bunch of private money out there, and overturn an election.

NO recall.
NO resignation.

7. Why is everyone asking for Davis's head? Cuz repukes subvert an election?
Is it like: "when will Clinton resign?" or when will Gore concede?" Are we being invaded by the paid petition collectors or am I in the Twilight Zone? What did Davis do wrong?

9. My point is that it would be perfect if Bustamante became Governor
if Davis is recalled. I suspect it wasn't what the Republicans had in mind and it would be a riot if it backfired.

14. I think he will
Most people I meet are not happy with Davis, and if the recall goes to a vote then Davis is out. The only question is who will replace him.
