A House aide has been subpoenaed by a grand jury in
Los Angeles investigating ties between a lobbyist and
Rep. Jerry Lewis, the top Republican on the powerful
House Appropriations Committee.
The subpoena went to Greg Lankler, a staffer on the
Appropriations Committee's defense subcommittee,
according to a House official with knowledge of the
subpoena. The official spoke on condition of anonymity
because he was not authorized to discuss the issue
publicly.
The subpoena was the first sign of action in months
in the investigation of connections between Lewis and
lobbyist Bill Lowery, a former congressman whose firm
represented a number of towns and businesses in and
around Lewis' inland Southern California district.
Lewis has received campaign donations from Lowery, his
clients and his colleagues. Meanwhile, Lowery's clients
have received targeted federal spending, known as
"earmarks," approved by the committee, which Lewis
chaired until Republicans lost control of Congress last
year.
