Burmese monks 'to be sent away'
Source: BBC

Thousands of monks detained in Burma's main city of Rangoon will be sent to prisons in the far north of the country, sources have told the BBC.

About 4,000 monks have been rounded up in the past week as the military government has tried to stamp out pro-democracy protests.

They are being held at a disused race course and a technical college.

Sources from a government-sponsored militia said they would soon be moved away from Rangoon.

2. Burma: Thousands dead in massacre of the monks dumped in the jungle
Burma: Thousands dead in massacre of the monks dumped in the jungle

Thousands of protesters are dead and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle, a former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta has revealed.

The most senior official to defect so far, Hla Win, said: "Many more people have been killed in recent days than you've heard about. The bodies can be counted in several thousand."

Mr Win, who spoke out as a Swedish diplomat predicted that the revolt has failed, said he fled when he was ordered to take part in a massacre of holy men. He has now reached the border with Thailand.

A Swedish diplomat who visited Burma during the protests said last night that in her opinion the revolution has failed. "The military regime won and a new generation has been violently repressed and violently denied democracy. The people in the street were young people, monks and civilians who were not participating during the 1988 revolt."

3. Burma is a *very* religious country
Turning thousands of monks into martyrs is the very worst thing the government could do; nothing will inflame the populace against the government than this.

5. Read up on 8888
The 8888 Uprising (Burmese: ၈၄လုံး or ရ္ဟစ္‌လေးလုံး‌; MLCTS: hrac le: lum:) was a national peaceful revolution demanding democracy that started on August 8, 1988 (whence the name of the uprising, from 8-8-'88), in Burma (now Myanmar), when university students started the initial demonstrations in Rangoon.

The Uprising ended on September 18, 1988, after a bloody military coup by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). Thousands, mostly monks and civilians (primarily students) were killed by the Tatmadaw (Burmese armed forces).

These shitheads will not hesitate to kill another few thousand monks and civilians to buy another 20 years of power.

7. This Looks Very Very Bad
Taking thousands of prisoners off to an isolated location? That sounds very very bad.

Maybe Bush can make room for them at Guantanomo.

9. Devastated beyond words
I'm so devastated by this news. Like some others, I thought maybe this story would turn out to be a very positive story of army mutiny and the triumph of the oppressed. Maybe deep down I knew it wouldn't turn out so gloriously, but this is so obscene, horrific and depressing.

I'm still waiting for some spiritual leaders like (my own) the Dalai Lama to speak out.

Kick and Rec so that people take a second look at what has happened, or is happening here.

and perhaps you should tell the protestors to call it "Myanmar" also. Will you tell them they are wrong right here?

21. Burmese soldiers 'had orders to kill monks'
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/10/04/wburma104.xml

A Burmese army major has told how he defected from his unit after secret codes were issued ordering them to shoot and kill protesting monks.

Speaking from his refuge on the Thai border, Major Hla Lin said he fled before protests began in earnest last week in Rangoon.

"I knew the plan to shoot and kill the monks. There were secret codes to start shooting. If I had stayed on I would have to follow these orders," said Major Hla Lin. "I am a Buddhist and I did not want to carry out these orders."

Major Hla is the only officer known to have disobeyed orders during the latest crisis, but his defection boosts hopes that there may be tensions or splits within the army.
