President Bush renews US sanctions on Libya
AFP via Hindustani Times

http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_521031,00050006.htm

US President George W Bush has renewed US sanctions imposed on Libya in 1986, saying that Tripoli must follow positive overtures on unconventional arms with "concrete steps."

"The crisis between the United States and Libya that led to the declaration of a national emergency on January 7, 1986, has not been fully resolved, although there have been some positive developments," he said in a statement on Monday.

The statement did not specify the duration of the renewal, but such sanctions -- which include a freeze on Libyan assets in the United States -- have been renewed annually since they were first imposed in 1986.

I thought there was a breakthrough? Should have known it was more smoke and mirrors.

1. Very intresting...
Saddam's compliance, along with Libya's, is sendinga message straight to the Arab world: pandering to the US gets you no where. Great diplomacy, eh?

2. Go EU! I hope they move right in there, before our
esteemed oil companies get the chance. That'd be great; Iraq on the Euro, and then Libya following suit. Maybe the Saudis will read the handwriting on the wall next?

3. The neocons will squander an opportunity.
Libya certainly will not accept dictates.

4. well that should show them, just go ahead and cooperate with
the US, and just see if we don't put boot in that ass.

poor qadhafi, wonder what he's going to tell the other little dictators now that he has kissed the bully's ass and got punched in the gut anyway.

5. Didn't Libya just demand and end
to the sanctions a few days ago? Threatening not to pay the pan am flight victims settlement if we didn't lift the sanctions "toot sweet"?

6. Well that was the agreement...
that the compensation money would technically be increased IF the US removed sanctions by Dec 31/03. (an additional 6 million per victim instead of the 1.2 million that the French balked at when the agreement was signed)

Libya for their part has extended the agreements deadline to May to allow the US to comply.

Essentially the US media has try to 'spin' this one to cover up the Settlement angle...

Also there must be tons and tons of cash 'frozen' in the US that must be no longer available when you think about it...it is a great way to 'steal' a nation's cash actually...just get the UN to sign on and BINGO! free money
