Murata to shut down factory
By Anne Danahy
adanahy@centredaily.com

FERGUSON TOWNSHIP - Murata Electronics North America will close its manufacturing operation on West College Avenue in March, putting about 300 people out of work and continuing the decline of Centre County's manufacturing sector.

Employees were told Monday of the decision, made just before Christmas, to close the plant, said Takeshi Egawa, vice president of U.S. manufacturing for Murata.

A fixture in Ferguson Township for more than 40 years, the plant produces ceramic chip capacitors. Just five years ago, 1,300 people worked there. But that number has dropped precipitously in the past few years.

---snip---

"Obviously it's a blow to the local economy following on the heals of Corning," Exarchos said. "The economic development for the county becomes an even more urgent matter and top priority for the commissioners."

---snip---

(Corning refers to Corning-Asahi, which shut down last fall.)

7. Centre County can ill afford that

There isn't a whole lot of industry up there to begin with unless you are cutting wood or working the strip mines. This could be disastrous for that area.

BTW, not surprised by that pile-up, although that's not the worst section of that highway. I drove through a lot of nasty weather on 80. Nasty road in the winter, especially the Loganton area.

8. I especially hate the Interstate
between Milesburg and Bellefonte, and I haven't driven I-80 alot, but I have taken that on a daily basis sometimes, the road is just horrible. Pot holes... and I thought PA was fixing the problem. OOPs no thats right, they just built that monstrosity from Pittsburgh to State College. The Pigskin Porkway...thank you Mr. Shuster. (Sr.)

9. Worst section of 80 is still the Poconos
In the dozens of times I've driven through, I have almost always seen a terrible accident somewhere in that area. A fucking mess, especially with rich little Jersey brats driving daddy's SUV without proper caution or respect for conditions. A horrorshow, from Tannersville to the border.
