Jenna Bush: 'I'm Just My Father's Daughter'
Source: ABC News 20/20

<snip>

The story may be about Ana, but Bush says her book is a portrait of the many children she met while in Latin America, a representation of the millions of children around the world living with the same adversities.

"What about the abstinence question, which we think of as part of the administration? Was it tricky to be writing about AIDS and sexual choices and condoms?" Sawyer asked Bush.

"No, I mean, not at all, first, because I'm not part of the administration. You know, I'm just my father's daughter. ... I think that when we're talking about keeping kids safe, and we're talking about Ana and other kids that are living with HIV or other STDs ... kids need to have education; they need to be educated in order to make the right decision for themselves," she said.

Since returning from her work with Unicef in Latin America, Bush made headlines last month for her engagement to Henry Hager, the son of a politician and a former aide in the White House, whom she has dated for three years. The proposal took place while Hager and Bush were hiking in Acadia National Park.

"We hiked Cadillac Mountain, which is the tallest peak on the Northeast. ... It's supposedly where the sun first hits the United States. ... We got up at four in the morning, we had camped out in a tent, and he woke me up, and he was really excited, and of course, I did not want to go hiking at four in the morning. It was freezing. ... We hiked in the dark for an hour and a half, and then when we got towards the top, with the sunrise, he asked me," Bush said.

Bush accepted Hager's proposal.

In the upcoming months, Bush will go on tour to promote "Ana's Story," visiting schools to teach students about tolerance.

35. Okay, let's do that.
The "things that many young women do" don't include a life of privilege and cachet.

It's disingenuous at the very least to compare Jenna to the young woman down the street, who waits tables and takes night classes at the community college. So let's not even try.

8. Good for her !
It's good to see her mature...as all young people do.

I can truly appreciate her wanting to be her own person, with ideas that may not be in line with either of her parents. That was and is the case with me and lots of people.

I wish her the best of luck in whatever she chooses to do.

At 1,532 feet, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and is the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6.

31. The only thing is, you can drive to the top of Cadillac - so it's a bit of an anticlimax when you
hike to the top (although at least you can find a bathroom/water/a place to buy a Coke when you get up there.) I think it would be more romantic to propose to someone on the top of Sargent, or Champlain mountains instead. No cars!

37. it's a nice area, besides the proximity to Kennebunk
and the influx of fratboys trying to impress their girlfriends by lying about the relative size of the mountain. Yeah baby, it's the biggest one in the area, but only when it's dark out.

30. Jeesh. Tallest in Arcadia is to her the tallest in the NE.
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 02:58 PM by Feeney2
I think Cadillac is the tallest coastal mountain in the NE. Is this whole family completely stupid. Now I would give her some slack on her misunderstanding of what exactly is meant by tallest in NE if she were from Arizona but these people spend one whole lotta time in Maine. I know because I've been stuck in that effin Rt 1 traffic when the bozos are in town.

33. Oddly it quotes her as
saying, We hiked Cadillac Mountain, which is the tallest peak on the Northeast...."

I wonder if she said 'in' or 'on', and if she said 'on' if maybe she didn't follow "Northeast" with some word ... like maybe 'coast'?

10. The media's trying to turn her into a role model to justify giving non-stop coverage to her wedding
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 12:23 PM by Mike Daniels
Does anyone beyond the perpetual 30% actually think this dink had any direct involvement with the writing of "her" book?

If Jenna got married today, no-one outside the 30% and FOX News would give the slightest bit of attention to her wedding. However, I guess the media thinks if it can turn her into St. Jenna they'll be able to shift to all-Jenna/all the time coverage as we get closer to the date.

ETA: that was my first snarky reaction, but maybe there's hope after all. 'Visiting schools to teach students about tolerance' - if it was her dad, it would be to teach them about INtolerance.

14. Her "repudiation" of her father's views
would have a touch of credibility if she weren't marrying someone with identical delusions. Well, at least it's true that just like her father in one respect, she is a lying hypocrite.

Says all I need to know about any recent enlightenment that Jenna may have recently stumbled upon.

If was marrying someone who hadn't worked directly for the Bush administration (and for Rove no less) she'd be a little more convincing.

But it sounds like you disagree with his policies and yet you campaigned for him and I'm sure you voted for him. You can't have it both ways, cupcake.
