More than 100,000 protest in Myanmar

YANGON (AFP) - More than 100,000 people flooded the streets of Myanmar's biggest city Monday, joining Buddhist monks in the strongest show of dissent against the ruling generals in nearly two decades.

The enormous show of strength drew a swift rebuke from the military government which threatened to "take action" against the monks, even as world leaders and the UN secretary general urged the junta to show restraint.

Two major marches snaked their way through Yangon, the nation's commercial capital, both led by robed monks chanting prayers of peace, witnesses said.

Some marched through the rain under a banner reading: "This is a peaceful mass movement." Others had tears in their eyes...........

7. I think it's a 50/50 call right now.
I think it's a 50/50 call right now. As the monks are considered the highest moral authority in the country, I can't envision a scenario that would allow the government to both retain control whilst simultaneously maintaining the support of the populace. Seems to me that the govt. could do one or the other, but not both.

8. If the regime cracks down on the monks they risk a revolution.

Buddhist monks are revered in Burma. If there is anything that will trigger a revolution it is images of the regime killing monks.

5. No, they are not Ghandi, or Martin Luther King.
They are Buddhist monks, and thousands of followers, protesting peacefully.

9. Myanmar monks defy military threats
Thousands of monks and supporters have again gathered on the streets of Myanmar's biggest city in defiance of government threats that military force will be used to bring an end to more than a month of protests.

---

Government loudspeaker vehicles were reported to be cruising the streets of the city on Tuesday saying the clergy had been ordered not to take part in "secular affairs" and accusing certain elements of trying to instigate unrest.

The order cited a legal clause which would allow the protests "to be dispersed by military force".

On Tuesday witnesses said military trucks had been seen near the Shwedagon pagoda, the focus of recent marches by thousands of monks and the country's most important religious shrine.

10. Topping - seems like the week's biggest story to me.
Can't help but fear a violent reaction, though things have changed since 1988 and the junta may not be able to risk it. Wish there was some tangible way to demonstrate support for the monks and people of Burma.

12. What Has Changed in Burma Since 1988?
There are likely even fewer constraints on the actions of the junta in Burma today than there were then.
