Howard Dean focused a Saturday night speech at the Boone County Fairgrounds on rebuilding a strong community of Democrats and criticizing the Bush administration on foreign policy, education programs and a lack of help for small businesses.
He didn't lash out at rival candidates for the Democratic nomination for president, saying now isn't the time for a divided party. "It's getting down to the last couple of weeks (before the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 19)," he said. "We have to look at what we can do to save the Democratic Party. A positive campaign will beat a negative campaign anytime."
The former Vermont governor spoke before more than 150 people at the fairgrounds here. He asked supporters to help bring back the 30-and-younger Democrats who have lost interest in politics or who have become disenchanted with politicians. "The way we could lose this election is if we fight it on Republican ground," he said. "We have to fight on Democratic ground."
He also said Democrats should concentrate on winning back the Senate and House so Congress can back a Democratic president.
