Poison suspect runs for Russian Parliament

MOSCOW, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The alleged killer of a former KGB agent in London announced his candidacy for Russia's parliament Sunday and cannot be prosecuted if he wins.

Millionaire businessman and former KGB officer Andrei Lugovoi confirmed Sunday he would run as a candidate for the ultra-nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, RIA Novosti reported. If elected, Lugovoi would receive immunity from prosecution under Russian law.

Russia has refused Britain's request to extradite Lugovoi to face charges he allegedly poisoned Alexander Litvinenko, also a former KGB agent, last November.
