Workers Independent NewsFund For Sick 9/11 Workers May Be Re-Opened
9-11 workers who didn’t develop illness until after the September 11 fund closed could be on course for some relief. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Monday that she is supportive of legislation that would reopen the fund. The bill is currently winding its way through Congress, but Pelosi, speaking in New York City, said that the government needs to do more for those workers. An estimated 10,000 workers did not receive compensation because it took years for their illness to develop. A bill currently being negotiated would do more than just reopen the fund – it would develop a 9-11 health program that would pay for treatment of anyone who was impacted by exposure during the World Trade Center collapse. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a potential 2008 Presidential candidate, has said in the past that New York City needs a source of funding to cover the constant flow of people filing suits against the city because they have not received any aid for exposure.
