GAO Criticizes Homeland Security
Source: Washington Post

Hobbled by inadequate funding, unclear priorities, continuing reorganizations and the absence of an overarching strategy, the Department of Homeland Security is failing to achieve its mission of preventing and responding to terrorist attacks or natural disasters, according to a comprehensive report by the Government Accountability Office.

The highly critical report disputes recent upbeat assessments by the Bush administration by concluding that the DHS has failed to make even moderate progress toward eight of 14 internal government benchmarks more than four years after its creation.

The report is to be released to lawmakers today, as the Democratic Congress, Republican White House and presidential candidates from both parties are beginning to debate the administration's record of accomplishments since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, whose sixth anniversary will be on Tuesday.

It echoes a sober report card issued by the former Sept. 11 commission in December 2005, which awarded mostly failing and mediocre grades to the administration's efforts to prevent another terrorist attack.

1. At least there's still one office of government that notices these things
Thank you, career civil servants.

3. Probably a good sign...

That the fascist state's apparatus is universally mismanaged. It's not just over in Iraq, Afghanistan and Colombia and here in New Orleans, it is getting uglier for many of us all across the nation who are "out of the loop".

Like every other enterprise that Shrub has ever been involved with, this regime is completely incompetent and mostly managed by once useful, but maladroit idiots.

The USA is going to be a utter and complete, possibly irretrievable mess if this regime continues in power until January 2009!

I guess that it is going to take videos of "Jeff Gannon", Rove and Shrub in a love clinch, swapping fluids, before impeachment comes out of the closet and gets put back on the table.

So sad...

6. I think that even if videos like that surfaced
* would pardon and give immunity to anyone involved in his cabal. We are already beyond messed up. I really don't see any way out this mess he's gotten us into. He's been to busy running off with our money to do "his job"

5. I believe that the name...

Is a useful reminder, and you certainly should be hearing the crescendoing echos of fascism! You are not alone...

7. Aaand what pray tell can someone please define the subtle difference between
Homeland Security and National Security. . .?

It's senseless. Prior to 9/11 we had a slew of so-called intelligence agencies who weren't communicating with one another.

So these towering geniuses create yet another big bloated bureaucratic bungle that can't even figure out where to deliver water after a massive hurricane.

Unbelievable really.
